I've searched for public speaking, and there's no topic about this. This is my first thread. If you want to talk about general phobias or any other phobias, go here :

Phobias : http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-174522/Which-phobia-do-u-have.html
Toilet phobia lol : http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-154092/Do-You-Have-Toilet-Phobia.html
Funny phobias : http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-192916/Funny-phobias-.html

This is a thread focusing on public speaking.

I have this phobia of public speaking but wait, i only have this phobia to a certain audience. I usually don't have any problems with general public speaking. When there is a respectable and high-ranking person(in my case e.g. head of the school) as an audience, I got scared. Not to mention I respect him since he's good at public speaking and persuasive. Not only did I stutter but my palms were sweaty as well and i was afraid of making mistakes. I couldn't get rid the fact that he's highly respectable and keep thinking that I'll humiliate myself big time! As a result, I couldn't think of anything but to get the hell out from the stage.

It was said that that public speaking is on the top list of phobias for most people - not heights or spider, but PUBLIC SPEAKING.

What makes us afraid of public speaking? I read an article about it. http://www.impactfactory.com/gate/public_speaking_training_course/freegate_1552-1104-88327.html#why

Here's why

* You may be judged by all those people, and judged badly
* You may feel like a fool
* You might make mistakes and loose your way
* You'll be completely humiliated
* You'll never be as good as _________ (fill in the blank)
* 'They' won't like you
* 'They' won't 'get' what you're trying to say

true..I keep thinking that the audiences are having high expectations of me and because of that, I kept thinking "OMG, what if I said something wrong. d;sklhadlasjdl;asjdla;jdla;das, they'll think im weird..."

Your hands may sweat and your mouth goes dry. Your knees may shake and a quaver affects your voice. Your heart may race and those well known butterflies invade your stomach.

The chest hurts as well D:

Maintain eye contact for a second or two with as many people as possible

Eye contact is one of my weaknesses. I can maintain eye contacts with my friends but not with adults. Their eyes stab me each seconds.

For most people, even a general public speaking is hard to them. Discuss about your experience of public speaking and hope that we can learn from them? Sorry if my story doesn't make sense because that is based on my experience. I think I'd rather have the height phobia or maybe clown phobia since I haven't seen them for years than this. I'm thinking of getting rid this phobia. I'm only afraid of high ranking person, maybe they should make a new type of phobia..hmmm.. highrankingophhobia? o___O

better get prepared and rehearse . the first five min will be a little hard (phobias , that is )so just do something to get a sort of tipsy like nobody exists and the rest will be fine just as rehearsed.

preparing is a good thing but for some people(not me) think that it's not worth it to rehearse because they think they're going to end up nervous anyway. That is the result of low esteem.

I don't like speaking in public. The thought of everyone looking at you, concentrated on your actions and words scares me. I fear I might do or say something stupid while in front of them. That's why I rather stay unnoticed O_o

The only reason I detest public speaking is that I never prepare for those damn things. But once the nervousness leaves and you get the ball rolling, it's just a matter of keeping it up and not losing your place or your train of thoughts.

I've spoken at prospective student receptions, debates, large club meetings, done proposals, toasts, MC
'd a fashion show, etc. In all of them, the best thing to do is get over your nervousness and to always look at your audience. See how they react to what you say, if you notice them getting bored or relaxed, bust out a timely joke or quip so their attention comes back. Etc., blah.
