Hi, I see crunchyroll has a download option on some videos which lets you save in an ipod playable format - does that mean h264 streaming videos are also encoded with the same ipod compatible settings?

The developer of a neat tool which lets ipod/iphone users playback h264 encoded flash videos asked for some help in the site support thread a while back:

I'm the developer of iTransmogrify, which enables Flash content by pointing to iPhone/iPod compatible alternates.

I've added preliminary support for CrunchyRoll, but unfortunately none of the raw h.264 movie files I tried would play on my iPhone. What compression settings are you using and could future h.264 videos be encoded with iPhone compatible options?

Thank you,

more info on iTransmogrify: http://itransmogrify.googlecode.com/

His app does allow the mobile safari browser to get past the "please update your flash player" error message and then actually tries to play the video but fails (at a guess the h264 profile used is incompatible):

Anyone willing to help this developer so that people can get their crunchyroll fix on their ipod or iphone?

Hmm, I really like that. But the developer needs to contact either shinji himself or one of the Sous-Chefs to get the proper info. Personally, I just use vtap.com

Hi, nasman, thanks for the tip.

The problem is how CR's h.264s are encoded. I didn't look too deep, but I'm guessing they're using something like b-frames which don't work on iPods.

Apple's encoding guidelines are here: http://developer.apple.com/webapps/designingcontent.php

As I said in my original post, I got it working as much as I could. If CR encodes the movies so they can play on iPhone/Mobile Safari, everything will just work.

Of course, with iPhone 2.0 dropping next month (most likely), maybe this will all be a moot point.

Thanks again,

joe

Please don't create threads in this section of the forums. Killar already posted a similar solution to stream videos on CR through your iPod Touch/iPhone, here.

As far as "itransmorgrify" is concerned, if the user would like to seek a professional engagement with the CR network, then he should contact Shinji directly.
