damn it !!!!!
you guys really dont get what a MARY SUE is do you????
let me state this : mary sues are usually characters that are perfect in a sense. they are favorible by the author and he/she will write really good stuff about them.
let me also state this : every character needs to have a minimum of FIVE flaws. and NO.CLUMSINESS OR ANY MOE INNOCENT GIRL TYPE THING IS NOT A FLAW !!! mary sues are in a sense "INNOCENT"to the point where it really annoys you. yes they make it so that shes kind, excels (optional) in a particular skill, likes by EVERYONE and has tons of guys falling hoplessly and madly in love with this sue. she is SPECIAL ..
STUPIDITY AND OBLIVIOUSNESS = someone said about tohru from fruits basket. yes i think shes a mary sue and all her stupidity and oblviousness isnt actually a favorable flaw. i mean it adds to the innocence all sues have.
BELLA FROM TWILIGHT IS THE BIGGEST MARY SUE today. go type on google "bella mary sue" and you will find the answer
AMU from SHUGO CHARA is also A SUE.
only people who have read many shoujo mangas and fanfiction original characters would immediatly spot this sues.
yes this is long and i hope this will provide you with infos on sue. correct me if im wrong.
MARY SUE IS CLICHE AND THE ENEMY OF FANS !!!
(strangely sakura from tsubasa fits in but for some reason im not annoyed by it)
(wheew that was alot)

If you go back to the original meaning of "Mary Sue", no character in anime could be one, as it only applied to fan fiction. One of the defining characteristics of a Mary Sue was that they would be a new character created by the fan fic author that would outshine the main character(s) of the story. Unsurprisingly, the character was often an idealized version of the fan fic author.

Even if the term has mutated over the past 35 years (yes, it is at least that old), it would have truly been perverted from the original meaning if applied to the main character of an original work. To retain any resemblance to the original meaning, it would have to apply only to a more minor character, or one that appeared for only a small number of episodes.

To all those who keep uttering "no one's perfect", I'm pretty sure the OP is referring to characters (main or minor) who are deliberately depicted as exuding that redundant "goody two-shoes" or "I can do no wrong" persona, although we may readily detect flaws within them.

Anyways, Mizuki Agatsuma (Yumeria) sort of illustrated this trait~

This.

Anyway, I think Layla Hamilton is one of the closest chars to a Mary Sue I've seen, but she actually serves a real role and is a real character, so she doesn't really fit. Anime doesn't really do this, because the authors themselves tend to avoid the pitfalls that create Mary Sues.

This thread would serve as good evidence that the term "Mary Sue" has essentially lost all meaning.

An interesting article about the origins and decline of the term:
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MarySue

It seems this section is especially appropriate:

Mary Sue as Protagonist You Don't Like

An alarmingly widespread use of the term, and one reason a lot of people feel that the term has lost whatever useful meaning it once had.

Maybe Kazuma from Kaze no Stigma? I dont hate him though...he's my favourite character in the show.
Goodlooking, cool and calm, smart, has very cool elemental power (controls wind), complicated past, one of the strongest and powerful characters in the story.

Mary Sues aren't actually perfect though. They do have have one ridiculous flaw like being unathletic or something but it's a flaw that only gives more attention to them. Like Bella in the Twilight series.

ahhh..... yes i am sorry for unconciously stating that mary sues are original canon characters . i was enraged the time i wrote it -___-
but yes i think literature now even has a special test so that your oc in real literature on fanfiction doest turn into a mary sue . the official name is the litmus test.
and i think mary sues in real stories the authors over exagarates their "so called goodness". and when people do that it kind of thing it kind of pisses you in someway. it maybe a form of jealousy to the character or it is just plain annoying to us. i mean, a girl shouldnt have more that 2 guys chasing after her , and thats , if its worth it ( almost every shoujo manga out there the girl is a mary sue. ALMOST)

oh, and i think what happened in twilight was that the author was experiencing what we call "self insertion"
that happens to almost any mary sue. heck, im pretty sure that its all mary sues. its when the author puts her self in mary sues shoes and writes on the oh so perfect life that she always wanted into her story. i mean, no offense to twilight lovers but isnt bella a bit like steaphenie meyer her self ?
well ive never actually read twilight so correct me if im wrong coz i only got this from my conversations in art class
as my friend says "twilight is stephenie meyers sexual fantasies stamped on a book"

(thanks for pointing things out TheAncientOne)
