Your First Anime Convention
|
MegaCon 2011. Never been to a convention (wasn't even aware of what they really were), was temporarily living in the state of Florida so no friends/connections but I'm a huge Star Trek fan, and they had a large cast lineup including my favorite klingon (Michael Dorn)--why not?
I was so nervous--should I dress up or not, because apparently people did ('what the heck is cosplay?'). Then I read a blog entry by some con attendee who said that it'd be an even greater experience if newbies dressed up. So spent a couple months choosing/purchasing some poor quality Halloween Star Trek costumes (Jadzia Dax & generic red dress) online. Went by myself, all dressed up and nervous as foeijaskdjfjseieas. But I got there, and had the time of my life; everybody was SO friendly, people recognized my character and asked for photos (honestly did NOT expect that), blew like five paychecks on merchandise, hugged Mr. Dorn, and made a couple of friends. And most importantly--purchased my first anime (Hetalia)!! I really didn't like anime at the time, but something about the atmosphere* just said to give it another shot. *(I must partially credit this to two cosplayers I saw of Black Butler's Sebastian & Ciel in Robin dress. I didn't know the anime or characters at that time, then but I thought they looked the most fantastic of all the other cosplayer at the con. What a handsome butler, and a beautiful girl in pink dress. Heh.) And now fast-forward--I pay for that little star on Crunchyroll, spend a majority of my hours watching anime, reading manga, making cosplays, and squealing over various fandoms. I just feel like I have so much to catch up on!! Definitely, the events leading to, during, and after that convention has DRASTICALLY changed the path of my life for the better. |

Anime Weekend Atlanta 2005. I was 20 years old. It was an awesome experience for a first convention--not too big, not too small. Definitely got me hooked!

My first convention was Otakon 2009 in Baltimore, Maryland when I was 22 years old.
I have attended Otakon every year since then. Besides vacations and traveling, attending Otakon is the most anticipated event for me every summer. |

Mine was at Anime North 2012 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada with a bunch of friends from school. It was pretty interesting and awesome, bought some stuff, met a lot of new people, took a bunch of photos and videos, volunteered and got my con money back, and I will totally go next year.
