After a long hiatus from any kind of con my first anime convention was 2yrs ago. I overheard some parents at my son's school talking about a local one that they were going to. My husband and I went and we had fun. Last year our son went with us. He spent the whole time in the gaming area. We'll be going this year too.

My first con was a few decades ago. I went into a tiny book shop near my home and discovered that in addition to getting to read science fiction /fantasy stories I could have beautiful art. People were publishing these things called "portfolios" of fantasy art. I bought one by Lela Dowling called Carroll's Cat. I still have it. The store owner told me about a con, which would be held in a few days, in San Diego called Comic-Con (at the El Cortez Hotel) and the fact that they had an art show. So I called and got entered. After work I drove the 200 plus miles miles to the con where where I displayed my art. The art of an artist named Jim Fitzpatrick was also in the art show that year. Talk about having the floor wiped with you. Still, I kept displaying my art for a few more years, until after I got married. Those were fun days.

I also made my first costume as a result of a book store. It was another tiny store in a different city. The owner wanted to enter the masquerade at Comic-Con. She was a huge fan of this self-published comic called Elfquest. She ended up with a group of over 20 people. We had great times making costumes, appliances and props. None of us had done anything like this, so we got to figure it all out for ourselves. We didn't win anything at Comic-Con, but we took our "show" on the road and did a few more cons. It was tons of fun and was the origin of a "cosplay" group.

Hooray for small bookshops! Get out there and read a book!

I think it was ten years ago when I decided to drop by Anime Central for the last few hours of Sunday events. I've learned many things since then, especially about fans and conventions.

It was about sixteen years ago when I discovered that comic, thanks to a friend and a library. Because of that experience, I learned that people made non-newspaper comics about something other than superheroes. And I learned that trade paperbacks could include a stories in proper chronological order. After catching up with the first three major storylines, I followed the late 90s Elfquest spinoffs for several years, until the monthly anthology issues ended.

Mine was Anime Expo in LA. Talk about high expectations. Other cons were kinda disappointing after that.

My first one was when my friend invited me to Otakon-2011, which he had been attending for several years already, albeit alone. I accompanied him with two other friends, and wow, I'm definitely coming back again next year. I don't know if I'll cosplay though, it would have to be a damn-good suit of armor that I would wear.

My first anime con was Anime Banzai in 2008, held in SLC, Utah if I recall correctly. I was 15 at the time.
