if it's brand new and it has photoshop with the package, it just means that adobe is promoting PS in a way.
the oldest versions, that are phased out or are about to be are freebies..

just like when I bought my wacom, I was very happy that it came with programs on cds but I soon found out that those are almost the oldest and perhaps phased out versions..they are good but the newest versions, as I found out by investigating on the net and downloading trial versions, were far more superior than what I got with the package.

I suggest you get the newer versions because that version may have some glitches or some buttons or commands are not available.

This tutorial is just like the Scanlines tutorial i gave.

Go into the channels window and create a new channel. Make a square selection about 20 pixels wide with the marquee tool. Fill it with white.
quick

In the menu, go:
SELECT > MODIFY > CONTRACT > Contract by: 1 pixel
Then, fill the selection with black. It will now look like a small white outlined box.

With the Marquee tool still selected, nudge the selection up and to the left, 1 pixel.
In the menu, go:
EDIT > Define Pattern

Clear the selection (Ctrl-D) and create a new channel.
Open the Paint Bucket options window and set the contents to PATTERN
Fill the new channel by clicking with the paint bucket tool, and a grid texture will magically appear.

Drag the grid channel onto the "Load channel as selection" button. []

Go to the layer window. Create a new layer and fill the selection. (Alt-Backspace)
