i think its because of a need felt by man. Most people are comforted by the fact that there is a supernatural being out there who is all powerful and can provide both safety and security in all aspects of life - physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. So, they go to church as that need is somehow fulfilled.

@midnitekiller,
well that sucks that we don't have an afterlife. Might as well do whatever the hell we want now while you're young, it's not like God will reward you for it. So how come we're not all doing whatever the hell we want to do now?

People attend large religious congregations because of social conditioning and a need for community within faith. People who do not feel a need for community with in their faith don't attend masses or similar group worship, or at least not regularly. We've also developed a concept over time that there is such a thing as holy ground, which reinforces our belief that we need to worship regularly in a specific area rather than home.

I personally don't attend a regular temple ground, but that's because I have no idea where one of my faith is located, so I pretty much have to worship in private.

In response to someone bringing up the commandment of the Sabbath...I might not be a Christian anymore, but I clearly recall that just necessitating rest and worship on the Sabbath. Even my uncle admits that worship of the Sabbath can be done at home and the transmutation done by laymen of good faith if need be, and he's a Catholic priest. Church congregation is more based on religious community and tradition. Remember that the people of the Old Testament were mostly nomads and lack "proper" temple. Their erected their own altars to God and prayed in that fashion, and that act alone was never displeasing to God.

Ever hear this one?
1000 hands claps in prayer can not beat a single pair of hands at work.

Yeap, that pretty much sums it up. Although that "supernatural" being is a mass murder and a sadist, but do they care ? no, they willingly worship a mass murder and a sadist and try to talk about morals. It's amusing.

Praying accomplishes absolutely nothing, when you pray your wasting time, that could have been used to do something that's actually usefull, 1 person who's doing a half hour of work accomplishes 100's of times more then 30 people who are praying, I mean seriously do you expect god to read your mind ? there is no way it can hear your prayer, mind you over the thousands of other prayers being prayed at the exact same time, it's not possible.

I found that most homeless would rather have a chance to make there own living then be given table scraps... I know do to asking a few of them wile I was handing out blankets. (talk about a joke, all the people handing out food and Blankets only doing it to feed there own egos.) I was angry just to be next to them.

By making a law where you have to have a license to have kids. Because lets face it little over 80% of the Homeless kids/Orphanages is do to over breading of the jobless, or the young who because there might be laws agenst abortion deside to abandin there kids to starve or have shitty lives on the streets or in over packed Orphanages.

'But even if that would help so meny of them, And fix a lot of the trouble America has with there homeless kids.

But if we did something like that what would churches use to take so much money from the god fearing people?

like many aspects of religion there's more then just one reason as to why, in this case its why people go to houses of worship and the reason usually varies from person to person, examples of answers include things like an obligation to go, genuine spiritual need to go, some people go because churches will often have programs that help impact the community in which they are located and these people wish to become involved etc (there are as many reasons as their are denomination of the religion in question) and yes some people do go because of conditioning, or because they'll get in trouble if they don't
personally I'm a christian and I haven't gone since I was about 7

Not everyone does it, and for the people that do, i'm sure there is a variety of reasons, not just one sole reason as to why everyone would go.

because people have been doing it for a long time and tradition is something hard to break. you don't have to go to church to be christian and nowhere in the bible does it say anything about church being a requirement.

i don't go to church. i don't see the point. i already know my relationship with the lord and jesus christ, and i don't need a church to be close with them.
