The Second Button is considered to be a High School Memento. It is somewhat a tradition in Japanese schools that girls got to have the 2nd button of the guy they like or the one who they considered to have spend the most memorable time with. Although that custom is somewhat rare this days, it is always presented on anime's or dramas to add a catch.

If there are multiple girls in love with a certain guy, the girl who gets the 2nd button or is given it is considered the winner in his heart. It's more like an indirect confession.

what do u mean the second button?
-the second button he gives out
or
-the second button on his shirt/jacket or something?

I'm referring to the 2nd button on his shirt/uniform. They did this so that it would only have little effect on the uniform (it would be revealing if it was the first button on his shirt and dangling if it was the last). Either the girl grabs it (usually the girl asks for it first and if approved grabbed it by the mouth and cuts it by her teeth) or the guy presents it to the girl he likes(or spent a good memory together) and if she accepts it, it's like they became lovers already.

yeah..coz that's the one that's supposed to be closest to the heart..oh the metaphor is overwhelming...

yup, that's also one explanation. There is a story behind that one. A girl on a graduation day confessed to a guy but the guy turned her down. The girl cryingly ask for the guy's second button. When ask why, she only said 'This, is enough for me. If I just could hold on to one thing closer to your heart. This will be my most important memory."

omg that's sooo cool...coincidence-much is that from an anime?

Nope, it's from an old t.v. japanese drama that I've watched. I think they retold the story regarding how the second button memento begun. I couldn't remember much of the details though but basically that was it.

nope, it's from an old japanese tv drama that I've watched before. An old lady retold the story to a soon-to-be graduating teenage girl on how the second button memento thing began. I don't remember much of the details though, but basically that's the whole thing. There are other stories behind as well like legends and folklores but they have a bit of unreality about them.
