Are there any other fans out there?

Over the past couple of years I've had the pleasure of really getting into some great games including the SMT series. My favorite series is the Digital Devil saga, but I've also played Persona 3, Devil Summoner and Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne.

My first exposure to any SMT game was Nocturne. I found it used in a local game store and brought it home. It was much darker than any other game I had ever played and honestly it kind of freaked me out. Want to know what I did next? I stupidly...traded it in for a measly sum of store credit which was about half of what I paid for it originally. A little while later I realized my mistake and found out as well how incredibly rare it was to find a copy in great condition, with the soundtrack and the game manual. Gah.

I picked up the second Digital Devil saga game on sale at my first job when it was on sale for only $15 and I fell in love with it. It was a completely different experience from Nocturne for me. It still had the dark, bloody, apocalyptic tones to it (which I came to appreciate over time) but the characters were awesome and they actually spoke! (yay!) I had liked the character designs already from what I had seen in Nocturne, but the personalities were fleshed out and I came to really care for them. The game was incredibly challenging and the battle theme "fight for survival" was addicting. After successfully completing the second game I figured I'd back track and play the first. I was lucky enough to find the special edition of the game on ebay.

The games I've played recently (eh, well, sort of. I bought both games when they first came out) are Devil Summoner and Persona 3. Now I've picked up Persona 3: FES and I'm anxiously awaiting the release of Persona 4. I also managed to nab a copy of Nocturne again...finally. Atlus actually reprinted the game and you can find limited quanities on amazon (I got my copy within three days!), yesasia and gamestop for a reasonable price. Unfortunately, this reprinted version doesn't include the soundtrack, but it's new and it's only $40+ compared to...what? $90+ on ebay?

Anyway...that's all for my babbling.

Hmm. I actually liked the look of the game a lot and I thought the story was interesting with the feuding tribes plus the whole "search for paradise" thing and then "holy hell--! All that for nothing!" :D

To each his own, I guess.

Persona 3 is awesome. Sooo worth the wait. I'll always be curious about Persona 2...I don't think I'll ever be able to play it.

Hm, my favorite still has to be Nocturne. As great as Persona 3 is, I still prefer Nocturne. There's barely any character interaction, but the whole apocalyptic feel and having to choose the reason in which the world will follow more than makes up for it. Plus, you can add Dante to your party as well. = )

The lack of character interaction was what turned me off about Nocturne the first time around. I was trying to get invested in everything, but the game likes to keep you at arms length almost. I really liked the Pokemon-esque type feel to gathering your demon posse. "I choose you...[insert demon name here]!" Hmm. Dante was a spiffy addition, I have a friend who nearly had a heart attack when I mentioned that he was in the game and she just wanted it to see Dante, that's it.

I used to be a HUGE megaten fan back in the day, but I've recently begun to dislike the series after the recent iterations.

I was a huge fan of the old games like Persona 2. Nocturne was the last game in the series I really liked.

DDS was ok, but I wasn't a fan of the melodramatic, character based story and especially the lack of demon conversations. I could tell that this is where the series began really going for a mainstream audience.

Devil Summoner was a cool idea as I love action RPGs, but just too simplistic.

Don't even get me started on Persona 3. P3 painted Japan as some magical land where kids get superpowers to fight the generic bad guys and use the power of friendship to get stronger. I kid you not, the power of friendship. It was at that moment that I said "screw it, megaten is dead to me" and went to Fallout for my dark rpg fix.

Wow, so you've played Persona 2? How is the game? I'm very curious.

When you say lack of demon conversations do you mean interactions with demons in general or just dialogue?

Devil Summoner was different and I really liked the change up in the battle system changing it from turn based to real time. It put a little unique spin on things.

Hmm. Fallout? What's that about?

Persona 2 (Eternal Punishment in particular) is a great game, my favorite ps1 rpg. Very mature cast of characters, very large city to explore (the city has 5 or so districts, each with a few locations in them), very indepth demon conversation system etc... I love it. Only thing is that it's hella hard. I still haven't beaten the 2nd to last dungeon (I youtube'd the end, heh).

I meant just demon conversations. DDS itself had plenty of dialog, probably more than Nocturne.

I would reccomend you try the reeeeeeeally old megaten games, like Shin Megami Tensei 1 and 2. Many of them never saw official US release because Sony of America is full of raging assholes, but fan translations have come out for a few, and some are still being worked on.

Fallout is post-apocalyptic RPG series about, well wandering about the world after it gets nuked. You can basically do whatever you want, murder people, become a drug dealer, etc... it's got even more freedom than GTA, but has more emphasis on story. It's also got a got a hella fun battle system.

Hmm, so there was two Persona 2 titles? Eternal Punishment and Innocent Sin. One was released and one wasn't right due to some "questionable" content? I heard one had Hilter as a character featured in the game, is that true or did I hear wrong? :O

People in the US are still up in arms about the stupidest things. It's all about controversy.

Sounds intriguing. I'll have to read up about it some more.
