I think you're getting hikkikomori wrong, a hikkikomori willingly isolates his/herself.

no i dont think so. I think im a hikikomori+otaku, and im really unhappy because of it.it is not we want to isolate ourself but going out is scary. when people look at you you will feel that they despise you, and it is really unpleasant, every time i step outof my house i always way looking at the floor, and when people talk to me i normally just mumble a little than walk away (i dint want to but its a reflex). people in my school always say i antisocial. but my case is not serious as i am a student and needs to go to school, and i am able to be more open online. I have tried several times going out with classmate but all ends up no good.
its really sux, hikkikomori

Hikikomori s a Japanese term to refer to the phenomenon of reclusive individuals who have chosen to withdraw from social life, often seeking extreme degrees of isolation and confinement due to various personal and social factors in their lives.

Although there are versions where the hikikomori may venture outdoors, the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare defines hikikomori as individuals who refuse to leave their parents' house, and isolate themselves away from society in their homes for a period exceeding six months.

Moreover, clinically speaking, there is little difference between hikikomori and more formal clinical definition of people suffering from acute social withdrawal due to depression.

While many people feel the pressure of the outside world, and may feel uncomfortable in public (or "social anxiety"), a hikikomori reacts by complete social withdrawal to avoid all outside pressure.

From Wikipedia.

yes, hikki does choose to be isolated, well its like you had been wanting to try bungee jump so much and when you got the chance and you are preparing for the jump, you got freak out by the height and you are unable to jump down( lets say you are afraid of height) . you understand what i mean?

hey people u have to realize that a hikkomori and a NEET are different things. a hikkormori is a person who is in social withdrawal when a NEET could be just a dude who got fired recently

Yeah, he was a hikikomori. Which made the show great coming from someone who has experienced it. In other words, realistic.

I don't know anyone who's a hikikomori, but I feel really bad for the people that are. I'd hate being in the house all the time.

just because you hate going out that doesnt makes you a hikikomori
i bet half of you guys are only overdoing it... for attention lol

and if you're a hikikomori so what about food? money? school (since few of you are teenagers)? lol or maybe your family is supporting isolation?

I'm not a hikikomori.
But it is possible for me [and other teenagers] to stay at home for long periods of time.
In my case, my parents provide the food and the money. And for school, I go to this school that gives you packets of homework to do and attendance is not really necessary as long as you go at least once a week to return the finished homework assignments and to pick up new ones. It's called self study.
I rarely go outside and its not for attention, I simply just get paranoid and feel as if everyone is judging me.
I feel really uncomfortable in crowds. It has gotten bad enough that I decline most invitations to a party/event from friends. Enough times to make them not care anymore and not invite me anymore. Which is fine by me since I probably will decline future events anyway.

Back when i lived in london growing up there used to be a girl my cousin's best freind, she was a pretty little thing around when she was 16 she stopped going to school, and stopped talking to everyone, completely isolated herself from society, i have no clue what happened but it was my first interraction with a Hikikamori, its a serious problem was kinda sad
