Don't be so technical here... do u know why animation is an illusion of life (by the way... it's at least what the nine old men of disney said). Because in animation.. you r giving life to a character, give them a story, a personality... go deeper than illusion of movement (I see u take the definition from wikipedia.. but it's no big deal).

Anyway... I also take this from wikipedia.. the definition of anime

"Although the term is used in Japan to refer to animation in general, in English usage the term most popularly refers to material originating from Japan, a subset of animation"

That's why when I heard of the word anime... I always refer it to Japanese animation
=_="
meh i didn't feel like typing so much. so copy/pasta was the way to go.
wikipedia isn't the best reliable place but i doubt anyone would bother putting false information for the lulz on things like abbreviation and the meaning of animation. it's mostly on popular things like anime shows, religion, etc.
so i thought it was okay. anyway....

i agree with what those nine old men say but the basic definition is the illusion of movement. because without sound and/or music it's just movement. (well you can use body language to tell there story and then there's text but, yeah i think you know what im getting at here.)

well regardless the english usage of the term is wrong then.
i don't mind people using the word anime specifically on japanese animation but the majority of people lose the meaning and take it as only refering to japan's animation.
which i dislike.
and well.....from your reply to me it seemed like you had no idea. so i apologize for mistaking you as a typical anime fan that knows nothing of the meaning.

Old animation (very old one) didn't have sound, music or even color. It's not just movement... but it's all about story... The term illusion of movement makes you think that the movement of the character is the thing that matter. But giving a "character" story is the most important thing, at least in hollywood animation, and next is to make the character moves... Without story (indeed sound and music is important but they're like the 5th or 6th), it's just a bunch of moving pictures. Thats why they don't define animation as illusion of movement, but illusion of life.

This is what I found from the online dictionary.... the definition of anime
Etymology:
Japanese, animation, short for animēshiyon, from English

: a style of animation originating in Japan that is characterized by stark colorful graphics depicting vibrant characters in action-filled plots often with fantastic or futuristic themes

I looked up the word anime from other online dictionaries.. and they basically define anime as a japanese style animation... well.. Maybe anime=animation is LITERARY true. But yeah... I always think of japanese animation when I heard the word anime... It would be weir if u say that Tom and Jerry is anime, no?

Too bad you don't speak Japanese.

I got this from Wikipedia... and most dictionaries say the same thing....

Although the term is used in Japan to refer to animation in general, in English usage the term most popularly refers to material originating from Japan, a subset of animation.

That's why I (not only me... but many people) refer animation as japanese style animation... Well, I'm not japanese, and I don't speak the language, so I know nothing XD. In my country, most of us refer anime as japanese style animation. And I've been in the State for 2 years.. I go to art school and majoring animation... I got several japanese friends and some of them draw the japanese style animation.. they also refer it to anime.. All of my teachers also say the same thing... We also got anime and manga studio class... but yeah... u got the idea...
