Not saying anything against you, but just my opinion of it.

If you want to watch an anime with a pretty ridiculous story and extra fanservice, close enough to hentai, but not hentai, then watch it.. It isnt a good anime if you are looking for more a harem anime with an actual story

Harem merely ingratiates us males into a false world, a fantasyland. No guy has 5 girls that fawn after him and constantly follow him around, does his chores, cooks him food, mothers him, while still being sexualized. Guys in general, and particualrly in Japan, love this genre because its a polar opposite to the real world. This is why the genre is mass produced, the anime following has a large number of males who buy into this false fairyworld. Most women who see an episode of a harem have just the same responses as p123v567 and rhynny. I admit to initially liking Harem years ago, but the more I thought about it, the more I concluded that it was enforcing some ridiculous stereotypes.

This wiki entry describes many criticisms against harem as well as the typical character types of the female protagonists. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harem_anime

i don't understand why girls would ever like harem animes. i was first introduced to it at 14 with Tenchi Muyo, it instantly repelled me because of reasons unknown to me until now.

Yeah, often reverse harems are more entertaining, maybe because they usually have some irony. The female leads are usually more interesting too. In addition to fruits basket there is Ouran, Saiunkoku, Yamato...
