Post Reply Ryosuke + Lucy Part 3
Posted 5/24/08
Sorry, guys, I had a brain cramp and I couldn't write. This is so not my best work, but as I keep writing, hopefuly it'll get better.

The next day was just the same. Boring classes, people passing notes, and people drooling on their desks.
This was typical for Ryosuke. He tapped his pencil impatiently on his desk, waiting for something interesting to happen, like the fire alarm going off, or a hurricane. He glanced over at Lucy, who was busily scribbling down everything the teacher was writing.
He longed to be with Lucy. Her gentle voice, those gorgeous eyes. He would do anything.
Lucy sighed, putting her pencil down. She leaned back and looked around the room and noticed him. The Ryosuke boy. The popular boy who had so many girlfriends.
Oh, crap, he thought. She saw me staring at her. But to his surprise, she gave him a quick, sweet smile.
Ryosuke had no choice but to smile back. He flashed a sloppy smile back.
“Yamada-kun, are you listening?” the teacher said.
“Y-y-yes, sensei?” Ryosuke turned his head from Lucy to the teacher. Everybody laughed.
“Were you listening?”
“Uhh…I’m sorry…umm…I was just….uh…spacing out,” Ryosuke said.
“Okay, but listen next time, instead of staring at Lucy, okay?”
Ryosuke nodded, very humiliated, but still, very happy.

After class, everybody made fun of Ryosuke.
“Everybody knows you like Lucy now,” Keito said.
Yuto draped an arm over Ryosuke. “Demo, you’re gonna go out with her, right?” Yuto pinched Ryosuke’s cheek.
“OW!” Ryosuke said. “Lucy’s scared of me, I know that she’s never gonna go out with me.”
“Well, anyways, today’s the girls’ volleyball team tryout, Manager,” Chinen said to Ryosuke. Ryosuke indeed was the manager of the girls’ volleyball team. “Maybe Lucy’ll try out.”
“Let’s hope so,” Ryosuke said as they headed towards the gym.

Everywhere in the gym, people were setting up the poles and the nets. Masami was practicing setting with Aiko and Saki.
Ryosuke took his rightful place in the bleachers, with Tomomi, the captain, and Mr. Kashima, the coach.
“Nene, there’s Lucy!” Chinen said. Lucy was just coming out of the dressing room. She was dressed in a white loose T-shirt and navy blue shorts.
“Kakkoii ne, Ryo-chan?” Yuto whispered, smiling. Ryosuke nodded.
Tomomi stood up, examining the group of girls trying out before her.
“Welcome, girls, to the girls’ volleyball team tryouts,” she said. “I’m Tomomi, the captain. And this is Mr. Kashima, the coach.”
Mr. Kashima bowed his head. The girls muttered a hello in reply.
“And here’s Ryosuke, our team manager,” Tomomi said. All the girls squealed excitedly, sending him flirtatious looks. Lucy just looked at him coolly. Ryosuke smiled at them all sheepishly, receiving more cries from the girls.
“We’ll be judging you on how well you serve, set, and spike the ball. We’ll also be judging you on your teamwork.”
“Okay, take your places. Aiko, you go on this side and take right front. Saki, you’ll be serving at right back. Masami, you take middle front. You’re our best spiker. Kumiko, take left front,” Tomomi said.
She regarded the remaining girls after the others had taken their rightful places. she didn’t like Momo, but she wore the right fashions. And Miina was hideous, but she won an MVP for volleyball last year. Airi wore big square glasses that made her look like Chicken Little. Chiharu had too much acne; she probably has never heard of cleansers. Lina came from a poor family, and lived in a ramshackle house. No way would she be in the team. And Maiko tried to steal her boyfriend before. Tomomi would never forgive that. Emina looked totally disgusting because she didn’t shave her legs. And last was Lucy. Lucy, Lucy, Lucy. She hated that pretty face. She hated how Ryosuke was so attracted to her. Lucy was the last person Tomomi wanted on her team.
“All right, Momo, you’re middle back. And Miina, take left back,” Tomomi said. “The rest of you just pick whatever you want,” she added, offhandedly.
What a bitch, Ryosuke thought. Choosing her friends to be on the same team. The other boys noticed this too, for they shifted in their seats nervously.
“Wait! Hold on!” Lucy called out when the others started moving towards the court sullenly. “Team huddle!”
The girls crowded around her.
“Okay, I don’t like the way this has been set up,” Lucy started.
“I know!” Airi said. “Tomomi hates me just because I wear glasses! It’s totally ridiculous!”
“She’s such a slut too!” Emina said. “Rumor has it that she slept with one of her boyfriends at a love hotel!”
Murmurs of agreement followed. “I’ve been watching Tomomi and her group, and I don’t like them so far. We’re gonna kick their butts today. So, who can serve really well?” said Lucy.
“I can,” Lina said shyly. “I’ve been practicing serving for years.”
“Okay, you can serve,” Lucy said. “We also need a setter.”
Nobody spoke. Then, Maiko spoke up. “I know I’m really short,” said the 4-foot-10-inch girl. “But I can set really well.”
Lucy smiled. “Perfect. We also need defense and a spiker.”
It seemed like nobody was confident enough to do the defense. But after much talk, Emina and Airi agreed to do defense and Lucy, after serving as team captain in America for years, and Chiharu became spikers.
“Enough talk now!” Tomomi bellowed. Lucy and the girls walked to the court casually with confidence. The girls on the other team just glared. It was showtime.

“Wow, you were amazing!” Miyako said, running down from the back of the bleachers, where she had been secretly watching Lucy.
“Thanks,” Lucy said, wiping her sweat off with a towel. “I really hope I got in.”
“Oh, I’m sure you did,” Miyako said. “You should’ve seen the look on their faces!”
Miyako followed Lucy into the dressing room. The girls who were on Lucy’s team were whispering excitedly, and when they saw Lucy come in, they rushed towards her.
“We were so good!” Emily gushed. “Especially you, Lucy! You slammed that ball really hard!”
It was true. Lucy really was a gifted attacker. Her spikes were almost professional, earning gasps from the other team, her team, Mr. Kashima, Miyako, and Ryosuke’s friends. Even Tomomi was shocked. And who could forget Ryosuke’s facial expression. He loved her even more.
“You’re totally gonna get in the team!” Chiharu said.
Lucy smiled. “But I couldn’t have done it without you guys. We’re all gonna get in!”
Tomomi’s friends, who were changing in the other side of the room, just glared at her.

“Ryosuke! Hayaku okinasai!”
“Yes, Mom,” Ryosuke said groggily, rolling around in his bed. He fumbled for his clock.
7:48. Mata nebou shichatta! he thought, frantically pulling on his uniform. He took his backpack and flew down the stairs. He rushed to the kitchen, where his two sisters were looking at their cereal blankly, and his mother was rushing about the kitchen, doing this and doing that.
“Morning, Mom,” Ryosuke said.
“Ohayo, Ryosuke,” Mrs. Yamada said. “Here’s your toast.”
“Thanks, Mom,” he said, grabbing the toast and shoving it down his mouth. He swung his backpack and started running towards the door.
“Ryosuke, anata --” Mrs. Yamada started, but he was already out the door before she could finish the sentence.
She sighed. “Kids these days,” she said to herself, clearing the table.
“Ne, Mama,” piped up Sayuri, Ryosuke’s younger sister. “Onii-chan bento wasureteruyo.” She held up Ryosuke’s lunch box.
Ryosuke’s mom looked at it and sighed. “If he hadn’t slept so late, he wouldn’t have forgotten it,” she said. “I wonder what he’s doing so late at night.”

Ryosuke ran. Although he wasn’t a smart student, he made sure he got to school on time. He sprinted through the streets, nearly colliding with an old lady as he did so.
As he strained his eyes to see past the familiar school gates, he was relieved. He could see the outlines of girls and boys strolling along to school. He wasn’t late.
Ryosuke spotted his friends at the turn of the hallway.
“Hey, gu--”
“Shh!” Daiki, Chinen, Keito, and Ryosuke Hashimoto said in unison.
“What are you guys looking at?” Ryosuke Yamada asked.
Yuto beckoned him to come closer. As he looked, he gasped. Lucy was staring gravely at a piece of paper tacked onto the wall, with her friend Miyako blabbering and gesticulating angrily. After a few seconds, her blabbering died, and Lucy sadly went into the classroom, with Miyako following after her like a puppy.
As soon as they were gone, the boys came out of their hiding place and ran towards the spot where the girls had just been standing.
“It’s the volleyball team list!” Yuto exclaimed.
“Lucy’s name’s not on there!” Daiki said.
“What?! After we and the coach talked about it!” Ryosuke said. Unleashing his anger, he took the paper, crumpled it up, and threw it on the floor. He looked back up at the boys, his eyes glazed with anger.
“Geez Ryosuke, other people need to see this, too,” Chinen said, picking it up and uncrumpling it.
“I DON’T CARE!” Ryosuke said loudly, loud enough for the people around him to stir and look at him.
“See, I voted for Lucy because she’s got talent, and because -- because--”
“Because you love her,” Yuto finished for him.
“Yeah, and Tomomi promised she would be on the team,” he continued. “But NOO, she didn’t put her on the team because she hates her and because she’s prettier than her.”
The boys were all silent. Then Keito said, “You should talk to Tomomi about this.”
“Talk to her?!” Ryosuke said. “Boys don’t talk to their ex-girlfriends!”
“But this is for Lucy,” Yuto argued. “You would do anything for Lucy, right?”
Ryosuke considered this. He realized he would, for he never cared for anyone as much as he did for Lucy.
“Thought so,” Yuto said, looking at Ryosuke’s face. “Talk to her after class.”

Social studies went by very slowly. Ryosuke kept shooting looks at Lucy, whose usually keen and bright face was replaced by a crestfallen expression. He couldn’t bear to see her like this, so sad and depressed.
As soon as the bell rang, Yuto came over to Ryosuke and said, “Now’s your chance.”
Ryosuke summoned his wits and marched to Tomomi’s locker, where Tomomi was putting on some Chanel No. 5. Ryosuke hated Chanel No. 5, but since this was for Lucy, he was going to endure the smell.
“Tomomi, I need to talk to you,” he said in the best voice that he could muster.
“If it’s about the volleyball team list,” she said, “I’m not changing it.” She started to walk away.
“Wait,” Ryosuke said, pulling her arm forcefully and pulling her back. “You promised my votes would count. Lucy’s an awesome spiker, and she would be such a great addition to the team.”
“You know Lucy,” Tomomi said, taking out a nail filer. “She’s too…I don’t know…pretty to play volleyball. It would be a sorry sight to see her pretty face smashed by a volleyball,” she added with her face in what she hoped to be a cute pout.
Ryosuke narrows his eyes. He moved closer to her in a threatening way, like a murderer, until he was a few centimeters away from her face.
“You are going to let her in,” Ryosuke said in a menacing tone.
“All right, FINE,” Tomomi said. “But if she ever disgraces the team, you know what’s going to happen.”
“And if you don’t tell Mr. Kashima to add Lucy, you know what’s going to happen,” he replied back.
“Okay. I’ll go,” Tomomi said, pushing Ryosuke away with all her strength. She scurried down the hallway towards the PE department office.
Ryosuke watched her go away, satisfied with what he had just done.
“See, I told you, you could do it,” Yuto said.
“In my opinion, I think you approached her a little too sexually,” Daiki said matter-of-factly.
Keito slapped Daiki on the head. “Baka!”

A few minutes later, recess ended and everybody settled into the classroom. Ms. Takigawa came in shortly.
“Minna san, please take out your--”
“Ano, sumimasen,” Mr. Kashima poked his head into the room. “I have an announcement to make.”
“Dozo, come in.”
Mr. Kashima stepped into the room. “We’ve updated the volleyball team. Lucy Kimura, you’re on the team now,” he said with a smile.
“Arigatogozaimasu, Mr, Kashima,” the teacher said. “Now, moving on…”
Ryosuke couldn’t help but look at Lucy. Her eyes were lit up with joy, reviving her bliss.
But she was still confused. Who had done this for her? Who was her knight in shining armor? It couldn’t have been Tomomi, she would never have let her in.
At least I got in¸ she thought dreamily. She would spike that ball real hard and be loved. her mom would be proud of her and would be able to attend all her volleyball games instead of going to business trips all around the world. Her dad would be watching her from heaven and sprinkle a little sunshine every time she scored a point. She couldn’t wait for the ball to come up and she would jump high and hit it real hard, and then --
“Psst.” Lucy’s thoughts were interrupted by the girl behind her. She turned back, and the girl gave her a piece of paper. “It’s from Tomomi.”
Why would she write me a note? Lucy thought as she unfolded the paper.
Listen, girl, the note read. It wasn’t me who put you in the team. It was Ryosuke. My ex-boyfriend. If you ever dishonor the team, you’re OUT. Make sure your pretty face doesn’t get ruined. Understand? Buh-bye. --Tomomi.
Lucy looked sullenly at the note and suddenly became nervous. All of her optimistic thoughts vanished.
She remembered her father’s words: Happiness is e the key to success. She loved volleyball and she was always happy whenever she played it. Nobody was going to stop her. Not even Tomomi or her friends.
But first, before that, she was going to say thank you to Ryosuke.

Class was over, and school was finished for the day.
“Hey, Ryosuke!” Keito said. “Yuto and Daiki are coming over to my house. Wanna come?”
“Yeah, sure,” Ryosuke said. “Ms. Takigawa told me to deliver these papers to the office. I’ll be there in a sec.”
“Kay, we’ll wait for you outside,” Keito said, running to join his friends.
As Ryosuke descended down the hallway to the office, he didn’t notice that the floor was extra shiny today. He slipped and landed on his butt, with the papers flying everywhere.
Shit, Ryosuke thought. Kakko waruina. I hope nobody saw that. Unfortunately, somebody did. When he got up, he noticed Lucy was starting to pick up some papers. Ryosuke just stared at her, not moving until she was done picking up the papers.
“Here you go,” she said and handed them to Ryosuke.
“A, a, arigato,” he said and blushed a little. His heart started to pound like a drum.
They started to walk together down the hall in silence.
“Listen,” Lucy said and stopped to face Ryosuke. “I just wanted to say thank you for adding me into the volleyball team.”
“Uh, yeah, it’s no problem,” Ryosuke said, trying to sound casual, as if he did this every day.
“I really love volleyball,” Lucy said. “And I’m just really happy you got me into the team. Nobody has cared for me this much,” she added, staring deep into his eyes.
“You did show a lot of talent out there,” Ryosuke said. “And you would have been a great addition to the team. I felt it was wrong when your name wasn’t on the list.”
Lucy smiled. Oh, that smile. Ryosuke almost melted. “I have to go now,” she said hurriedly. She looked at Ryosuke once more intently. “Again, thanks a lot.” She hurried down the hallway, with her black hair flowing behind her. As Ryosuke watched her go, he thought, No problem. I would do anything for you. Anything to make you happy.
