I don't know. A lot of animes like to try and leave it open. They most likely did it to leave it open to the possibility of a sequel. Artistically you want to leave stories open to individual opinions. Series that seem to have a finite ending are amazing but they aren't left open for future interest. You can't build ideas from it as easily and it takes away a lot of the popularity.
