umm you mean the small characters that are on top of kanji, so you know how to pronounce it? Those are furigana, not hiragana. Well they are in hiragana, but when they are on top of a kanji they are called furigana.

Also you have to learn both. Hiragana and Kanji are for original japanese words, while katakana is for foreign words that are adapted into japanese

Like TV. テレビ Pronounced Terebi.
or Computer コンピューター Pronounced Conpyuutaa

To be able to read Japanese, you have to know Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji (a ton of Kanji)

And yes i have learned Hiragana, and Katakana, and am currently learning a lot of Kanji.
