Read a dictionary. (English-Japanese) :)
I've learned how to read/write katakana and hiragana by myself...

katakana and hiragana are just symbols that represent sounds.

Just as we have symbols that represents word, like the symbol & it represents the word "and."

You will get it eventually, no one gets it the first time they look at it, it takes time to learn them.

fu is pronounced hu and ra ri ru re ro is pronounced with an l sound as there is no such thing as an r sound so its la li lu le lo rather than ra etc. i have no idea why when they change it to romaji that they change it to R rather thn L though =S sorry for the bad explanation

If you are really determined, you should get a Japnese tutor, because it's VERY important to hear how to pronounce it, but if you are just doing it for fun, than reading the Romanji will give the basic idea and most people will be able to understand you.

Japanese can be confusing. I've learned that it's done in a differant order than English. I mean, it may simply take years for some foreigners to master the language. I know I've longed for wanting to speak Japanese better than I did for some basic Spanish. The only problem is, I hadn't mastered the order of all phrases in spite of knowing some basic, yet common words.
