I do accept it, that's for sure, by posting this topic in the first place I only had the intention of possibly meeting people who felt the same way, and who I could converse with without having to read through all that '1337 speak'.
Firefox has a built in spell check, just to let you know. It is actually a pretty handy little tool =]

lol yea i'm using it at the moment. but i wouldn't use it to say, correct "i" to its capital, but more for words that i'm not 100% sure on the spelling for...too bad there's no autocorrect!!! yea ihave to agree with you on the whole 1337 speak though...

I think on forums and things we type like we talk, so its only AnNoYiNg WhEn PeOpLe TyPe LiEk DiS because it then becomes harder to read, OR WHEN PEOPLE TYPE IN ALL CAPS BECAUSE ITS ALSO HARDER TO READ, so besides that, if you just use bad grammar or spelling its all good.

For flames and stuff if they went away I would be sad, there some of the funniest comments on the internet, in how stupid the flamer sounds at least.

i agree with you. People can write in whatever form they desire as long as they don't insult other people or use derogatory remarks.

Hmm...I think grammar is an important concern, it's more eye-pleasing when stuff are written in an organized way, at least all understand what is going on as you write according to the international rules. Though we have to understand that not all of us here knows English perfectly or English isn't some's mother tongue, it may be difficult for them to be 100% grammatically correct. But I think we should try our best in keeping the grammar thing, I've seen rules in other communities and forums requesting people to write grammatically so to make everyone able to understand.

And for the caps...I try not to use them unless necessary. Typing in full caps gives me a feeling of shouting at people, which I don't really like to.

Flame wars and spam are detested by me. I mean people usually type in caps and abbreviations, sometimes I don't know what they're shouting about because of their styles of writing. And I really hate the disregard of basic politeness and courtesy in the heated flame wars, that's really annoying.

I've done a search and skimmed through the forum and found no thread regarding this, forgive me if I overlooked some thing. Also, by posting this, I am in no way trying to start an argument, so please don't post unless you have some thing decent to say.

While on forums I've noticed that not very many people use proper grammar. All I see nowadays are exclamation points and capital letters in the middle of words. Sure; its fine to misspell things, I do it all the time, but when you go into a forum and all you see is 'OMG dis is so cool, i luv dat shOw!!!11', don't you get even the slightest bit annoyed?
I realize this post is kind of coming from a personal standpoint on my end, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who gets turned off of even going on forums just because of the way people talk on them. I just wanted to hear others thoughts and opinions, as I've had quite a decent conversation on some other forums when I brought this up. Not to mention this is an extended discussion forum, so one or two word answers really are not going to cut it.

Which brings me to another thing; courtesy. Hate wars, flame wars, and flat out arguments over the internet are just plain stupid. Every one has their own opinion, which needs to be respected. I see so much hate around here, so please try to keep it out of this topic.

Thanks for reading, and I'd appreciate your thoughts on this subject =]

I'd tend to agree I enjoy using proper grammar and spelling of course I'm not perfect I misspell things in the end and also have issues with grammar. But it annoys me whole heartedly when people use improper grammar on purpose. I can understand if the person is young and has limited knowledge of if they don't know English very well. But its another thing to do it on purpose.
I also find online arguments completely retarded and pointless.

Ha! Grammar is basically a non-existent practice in the internet. Especially like online forums such as these. It's sad really. I've heard people say to me, "LOL u suk u feel ur bettr den every1 cuz you can typ gud!!".

Oh my goodness.

This not only speaks for the current online community, this speaks for society in general. What's even more pitiful is that they actually glorify atrocities such as these to flourish, and dismiss those who still has a shred of common literary capability. Seeing that there are cool new spell checkers that highlight grammatical errors with red lines, you would think that it would help, right? WRONG.

Apparently, these retards have grammar of that of a kindergarten child, but even kindergarten children can put together more coherent sentences than the idiots we call people nowadays. Don't laugh with me though, as you're probably one of them too. The only people who I hate more than illiterates are those patronizing hypocrites that get in their high horses and act like condescending fucks. Oh well, live with them.

Who's to blame? The educational system? The media? Commercialism? I'll bet it's all three of them. Fuck, I hate mankind. Thank goodness for Guitar Hero, though. There's still hope for humanity yet.

I used to nitpick at people who can't even spell properly or couldn't even string together a coherent sentence. I still think 1337-speak is mediocre and reflects your mentality. If you know how to speak English properly, then why not spell and portray it in such a way that is clear and understandable, right?

I used to have the impression that people who use 1337, flame, turn on their CAPS LOCK all of the time, use teh bad grammer (note the "e" in grammar) and use AlTeRnaTinG letters, think of themselves as teh kewlest!!!one11!!!shift1!!!

Well now I think it's a culture and it's best I leave those poor people in their own world of misery. After all, I'm not the one at loss for I can still spell and make sentences in a manner that retains respect and my intellect intact.

Good grammar and spelling are importart on the net because they allow you to be a clear as possible. It is frustrating to have to read through a message with misspelled words to try to figure out what the person is trying to say. It is inevitable that some misspelled words will get posted. But I personally think that we owe it to each other to be a clear as possible.

I didn't really see it as a problem. I just see it as people being lazy and don't feel like using proper grammar. Now, I can understand if your from another country and don't know English that well, but if you do know English and your typing like your supposed to be in special ed, then I get angry. I also hate it when PeOpLe TyPe LiKe ThIs. It's very annoying. Why do people think that's cute?
Posted 6/22/08
Normally it won't annoy me to see a bit of personality in someone's forum post but there is deffinately a limit >.>

like smiley faces are okay but when you don't even bother to type out a whole word then it gets to be too much :\

It really depends. If I see that they are: very young (like 10, or something), are obviously from a non-english speaking country, or obviously just made a simple mistake/typo--I'm very forgiving. I actually really hate it when people nitpick every single bloody word; mistakes do happen. However, it does make me wonder what the hell kids learn in school these days when I see a child honestly SPEEKIN LYK DIS IN FREKISHLAY RUUN ON SENTEZES WID NO PUNKTUASHUN LOL!11!!!!!!11!.

Now, if the atrocious grammar is coming from someone who is almost an adult or is.... I seriously can't help but question the person's intelligence. In forums, words are usually the only thing from which an impression can be derived from. It's really annoying and even worrying when someone who should be able to articulate their thoughts in an precise manner, cannot do as such.

Typing on a key board is hard work! Sometimes instead of typing so many keys i just decide 2 type another key that can stand 4 more than 1 key. Though i do h8 it when some ppl type words with the same amount or more letters just to sound cool. E.g. life = lyphe

I completely agree. Incorrect grammar is incredibly annoying. The internet is destroying languages worldwide. (Of course, I'm obviously not against the internet. That's just the downside of the internet.)

I also agree that there certainly is not enough courtesy on the internet. Constructive criticisms and debates are always wonderful, but these should not involve insults.

By the way, I just wanted to point out a slight irony in your post: "off of" is grammatically incorrect.

i only get annoyed with native english speakers who butcher their language,know-it-alls & self-proclaimed grammar police, who spell worse than the guys they accuse of poor grammar.
