mostly people write like that because they think thats how the language should be written. like the word "are", they think it is "r" i think that the words should be spelled like that but america would seem stupid if we did. in korea they say the word "neon" like no-n. but i still like the way we spell things(the right way). people that write like idiots do annoy me, and when you look at their age it is more unbelievable

I find grammar and spelling errors that are done purposefully to be incredibly annoying. I mean, is it really that hard to write properly? I admit to being a culprit a long, long time ago (when I was about 10 years old), but the "online language" today has gotten way out of hand. Some people wonder why their English sucks when they're typing all of this crazy stuff online. It sort of amazes me, but at the same time is depressing. If this continues, I don't even want to imagine how people are going to type in the future--I wonder if I can decipher what people are going to say..

I personally tend to have a higher respect for people that make an effort to have their spelling and grammar easy on the eyes. It may not seem like much but I'm much more inclined to read a post that uses full words, has paragraph breaks if it's going to be long, and capitalizes.

In a way people are grading you on grammar on the internet, on most other forums I post on if you don't use proper grammar and spelling most people will grade you poorly. I don't mean that it has to be perfect or you have to spell absolutely all of your words like in the dictionary or use complete perfect MLA sentences but if a majority of your post is abbreviations and there are no capitals (or worse, all caps) my eyes tend to glaze over.

Another problem is that many annoying people on the internet tend to use bad spelling and grammar. This creates a perfect storm of badness, when the medium to convey the points is awful and the points themselves are not worth the effort to push through the awfulness of the medium. In short, bad ideas conveyed with bad spelling and grammar.

I consider making an effort to look nice with your posts to be common courtesy on most message boards. Texting is one thing but a message board like this is not real time, there isn't the excuse of time.

I've done a search and skimmed through the forum and found no thread regarding this, forgive me if I overlooked some thing. Also, by posting this, I am in no way trying to start an argument, so please don't post unless you have some thing decent to say.

While on forums I've noticed that not very many people use proper grammar. All I see nowadays are exclamation points and capital letters in the middle of words. Sure; its fine to misspell things, I do it all the time, but when you go into a forum and all you see is 'OMG dis is so cool, i luv dat shOw!!!11', don't you get even the slightest bit annoyed?
I realize this post is kind of coming from a personal standpoint on my end, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who gets turned off of even going on forums just because of the way people talk on them. I just wanted to hear others thoughts and opinions, as I've had quite a decent conversation on some other forums when I brought this up. Not to mention this is an extended discussion forum, so one or two word answers really are not going to cut it.

Which brings me to another thing; courtesy. Hate wars, flame wars, and flat out arguments over the internet are just plain stupid. Every one has their own opinion, which needs to be respected. I see so much hate around here, so please try to keep it out of this topic.

Thanks for reading, and I'd appreciate your thoughts on this subject =]

yea girl i so agree, wth is da point of capitilizing random letters or putting in numbers randomly, i like 2 shortin words up but come on, thats jus stupid, maybe i'm jus dumb but it confuses meh and hurts meh brain ...nice forum btw^^

Humans tend to have a decrease in their I.Q. when confronted with a computer keyboard. Communicative skills dwindle due to the impression of being humorous in many forums. Even though they are not comedians...

If bad grammar isn't stopped this will soon happen:

So what are you trying to say? Your sentence either mean that you disagree about grammar being a huge issue or you disagree about grammar being not a big issue. Just from your response, you highly contradict your point about being intelligible even though the sentence structure and message is quite obscure. Because i don't understand what your saying...I would have to agree that grammar is very important in delivering the message around.

Yes i definitely agree with you. Posters and forum enthusiasts see you as an intelligent person when delivering your response. It also reduces errors in understanding what the message is all about.

I don't have a problem with colloquial english. Depends on the frequency, the use, and YES, the poster (cuz I'm biased ya know).

I could care less about the grammar, but the punctuation and the one-word posts are a different story. Anything else I see posted on the message boards are mostly filled with useless crap/spam, not to mention the thread titles themselves are mostly made out of pure retardness, and if you're bored, there's enough time to at least put something more and fix your post, rather than a useless post that says "+3/-\l\/\ l-l/-\xX()l2 1$ 6ol\ln@ P\/\/l\l j()oO /-\LL !11eleventyoneoneonetwo2!1!!!.!" or "I DON'T KNOW."

Being a lazy person doesn't also excuse you for posting something like that, you'd rather not post or not even read the thread if you're lazy. I myself am a lazy person, and I don't do much househould duties or anything else (heck, I'm even too lazy to gtfo my house and have a haircut unless it's something important), but I can at least type a paragraph in one of my posts.

If most of your comments on the discussion threads are mostly composed of single-worded posts, you're probably just an attention-deficit/attention-whore type of person (no offense intended, but that's the truth imo). I'm also talking about the grammar. Some aren't just fluent with the language, but that alone doesn't solve why they have to post such a useless comment with utterly misplaced punctuations other than screwing with the language itself.

Taking the net too seriously is still fail though, it's hopeless to convince everybody to at least post something more than spam.

I have a bad habit of judging people by how they type- it's terrible, I know, and I try to avoid it. But when people "tlk lyk dis ALL DA TIEM IT GETS KINda aNNOYIN LOLZ!!!1!"

I decided to go on this chatroom that my little sister(who is only a year younger than me, mind you) talks on one time. They said that I was "smart" because I talked "proper".
Not "talked properly", but "talked proper." And they kind of treated me like a joke.
And then they criticized me for it.

Oh, woe is the English language.
