http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAMn316vs8o&feature=related The badass song.

Anyway~......

Personally, I think the idea of having to combine in midair with torso, core fighter, and legs seems to be a waste. It clearly screams "Look! What's that? An enemy? In three parts even! Let's shoot it! Yaaaaay!!!! "

Plus, wouldn't the MS seem more fragile considering it can come appart as easily as combination? Like in real life, there could be a slight malfunction in a certain segment of the area where they merge. Thus, the pilot would be fucked.

Now I've only seen ZZ, Victory, and Destiny use this trick waaaaayy too many times than I'd like in watching recycled footage of the transformation sequence.

All in all, I personally think it isn't as good idea as others. I'd be easier to keep them as a whole.

Getter Robo, however, does a good job with it.

And once more, the song above is badass.

What do you all think?

There are some advantages though, like you can launch an MS from a carrier that can only launch fighters. Also, there's a better chance of 3 units surviving if the enemy tries to shoot at the catapult. Lastly, the chances of them getting hit is almost equal to a Big Zam trying to shoot down a Core Fighter in space with its Mega Particle Cannon.

IMO Transformation >>>>> Combination though. But if there's something that protects the three parts while transforming and those parts can shoot enemies by themselves, then it's good. (see Ideon)

I've never been a fan of combination because of the time it takes to combine and the fact that if a part was shot down and you didn't have a spare, you can't make the mecha.

Combination makes sense only on mass-produced units such as Victory and V2. Damaged parts may be ejected, and it can function relatively well even with one missing part. This is almost necessary because the additional moving parts increase the chances of a malfunction and mechs usually have a more sensitive frame.

I agree with caos950042 of the transformation and combination. In addition to protection during combination, another thing to consider is the speed of combination (also applicable to transformation). Two of the fastest combinations are Getter Robo and Gurren-Lagann, just crash and morph.

The combination gimmick was something that was good at the time.

If you're gonna take this shit to Ideon, note that the Ideo-Delta, the Ideo-Nova, and the Ideo-Buster are protected by a barrier which enables the rather slow combination process to be completed safely. Then it would kick ass, no problem.

Though, if a Mobile Suit has to be combined before entering combat, it has some advantages: it can be fitted more easily into a craft with an accommodation of less than a Mobile Suit.

On a side note, for those of you who have played Homeworld: Cataclysm, there's gattai; no kidding there. Those fucking sneaky Kiith Somtaaw miners....

First off, Shin Getter Change > All other form of combinations.
Secondly, Usso showed us that having detachable parts can have its own uses, such as pseudo-funnels.
Thirdly, Shinn Asuka a good combiner does not make.

In the Gundam universe transformation tends to be as frail and incomplete as combination. SO I go for the already complete MS with movable/flexible frames i.e. Jegan, Nu Gundam. Anything later in the UC. By Victory I'd assume they have combination down solidly but I don't like Victory.

When it came to shipping the gundam somewhere it would be quite beneficial.
($150 for shipping and handling; just kidding.)

In combat though; yeah... I don't think that would be good.

Example:
-Form Gundam now!
-Crap, Amuro's corefighter was shot down!
*explosion*
-Oh crap, Amuro's dead! I think I'll just go and eat my gun now.
