Beyond Human Comprehension
Posted 5/30/08 , edited 5/30/08
Right well I saw this documentary on T.V. about the universe etc. Basically they ended it by saying something along the lines of 'scientists continue to understand more and more of the universes secrets' and it got me thinking.

Even assuming we could teleport to anywhere in the universe at will and actually reach the secrets of space, Is it really possible for Humans to actually comprehend some of these mysteries?

I believe that there are somethings that no matter how hard we try we cannot understand- or even imagine. Take for example colours. Now, can you imagine and create a new colour in your head that you could not have seen with your eyes, in other words imagine a new primary colour, a colour that is not made up of a mix of the colours we see everyday. Surely if the human imagination was truly limitless like many people seem to believe we could do it with ease, even if we couldn't make it real in the world. Yet I can't. I cannot imagine a new colour that isn't based off what I see everyday. I cannot see what that colour would look like, even in my head. You try.

Surely therefore there will be other things out there that it is simply impossible for us to ever even imagine, let alone understand. Our minds simply can't comprehend them. For this reason, will we ever truly be able to unlock the secrets of our universe? (or even some of those found on this planet)

The universe can never be completely understood. I heard from a history teacher that when Christopher Columbus came to the Americas, some of the natives who lived on the shores couldn't process the ships because it was something they had never seen before, so they couldn't see them at all. A story that maybe wrong seeing as how a bunch of uncontacted natives saw a helicopter and freaked out

it will be impossible to unravel all the mysteries of the universe becasue when you solve one....another 100 reveal themselves

Perhaps after many generations of evolution to human's intelligence, human might thought we had discovered 'everything'. However, how can we be sure what we knew are correct?

nah,we got limited rods and cones in our eyes,so we cant process certain colors below red and beyond violet.Hence we call it "infra-red" and "ultra-violet"

Humanity would probably go extinct first before they can unlock all the mysteries.

we can't do it, 'cause we've never seen it. its not there in our mind so how can we dig something out? Our imagination always base on something that we've seen before, or from things that we know - thus creating a new thing.

but if you're asking me to create a bran NEW thing based on NOTHING - other than it has to be bran new and it has to be a colour or which ever.........its theoretically impossible 'cause we don't have ANYTHING to base it on. but if you're gona argue we have no limits in imagining - i agree, but like I've said, we have to base it ON something, if you give me a dot and tell me to imagine - sure i'll imagine out A LOT of things. but if you just give me a paper and tell me "draw something thats' "out of this world" and "not" based on "anything" that we've seen with human eyes - no base on ANY of those" that'd be impossible. no matter what you draw, how you draw it - it would ALWAYS connect to something.

take the example of native people seeing new ships; we can connect those ships to a floating leaf on water, or wood. - so they're not based out of mere imagination, its' base of natural science.

like wise, what i'm saying is - there REALLY is NO limit to human comprehension; the argument of asking us to imagine/create a new colour basing on "nothing" that we've EVER known/seen - that's against the basic foundation of imagination hence we can't do it; it doesn't mean we can't comprehend something that will be completely new.

I belive that we are gowing in our knowladge and potencial as we are supposed to, and have faith that we will eventualy reach the point were we are at least mostly reasonably understanding the universe and such.

well technically a new color is not up to your imagination its all in the spectrum that we can see. what if white is really some magic super color and we just cant see it
