As we should allready know illegal or free downloading is causing a disaster for the music industry. Yeah sure 'it's no big deal' but it's basically like waltzing in to a music store and shoplifting when the guards are not there.....

I mean sure it's only losing a 'little money' out on superstars to live a 'semi-luxury' but doesn't it reduce the chance of potential artists to be successful?? they won't even earn a dime!! and i know the music is about the music and gathering the fans and not about the money, but how the hell are they supposed to do that without a smegging chance?? i mean wouldn't YOU be pretty pissed off if it was YOUR band??? or your fav newcoming band???

I just want our opinions on this.....

eh, not a big problem imo. artists usually get their money from touring and playing shows anyway. if it wasnt for illegal downloads, some or many artist may not be as popular as they r now. =]

The actual artists usually recieve a very small percentage of the profits the recording industry makes selling the CDs. 30% is considered hella good, and that's only offered to platinum artists, etc.

Not condoning pirating music, per se, but it's something to think about.

i sorta feel sorry for all the CD stores going out of buisness, but if i had to buy my music i wouldnt have any at all. The government should just give up on policing "illegal" downloads we are going to find a way to get music for free. Like radiohead i think a lot of artists are going to follow that example.

Thank me for thinking different. Not like a typical drone of society listening to every word their mommies and daddies and the schools say.

i thank you

My philosophy............free downloading is great if you just wanna check someone out. If you really like the artist your listening to, and the free downloaded version of the CD ur listening to..........support him/her by buying their CD in stores. If the downloaded song/album is absolute garbage (Soulja Boy), fuck it.

That's my philosophy personally..........but I do somewhat agree with mushroomjay. At the end of the day, "Free is Free"

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that bands make the majority of their money by touring.

As far as downloading goes, 99.9% of what I listen to isn't available in any stores in the US, so I have to order whatever album I'm interested in and have it imported. I'm not sure if you've ever done that or not, but the cost can be outrageous. Once I bought two albums and the total came to $80. I know this is exactly why a lot of Asian music fans download music first before buying it. :/ I certainly wouldn't want to spend $40 for an album and then end up hating it. And spending $20/$25 for a two-song single is something I'd rather not do unless I know beforehand that I'm going to enjoy listening to it.

Also, I listen to an awful lot of Japanese Indies bands. They're always completely shocked and overjoyed to discover they have American/overseas fans. Obviously this is all due to people downloading their music and spreading the word about them.

Free downloads acts like a free advertisement, promoting their songs. If some die hard fans heard their songs via free downloads, they will buy it. I mean although u already have the song but, if they are surely die hard fans they will purchase their album as a sort of souvenir.

i know touring is an alternative way to gain the royalties but how are newcoming bands supposed to gain those tours in the first place.......the first royalties these new bands get is from selling records....

i also tho some what agree with mushroomjay abit with his first statement. but no one understands that with illegal downloading it will get harder and harder to sign bands. i mean, new bands won't even BE heard in the first place. Hows it gonna be any good for a potential band if they don't even get signed??

...that's not true at all. Didn't you read the rest of my comment? Downloading music is how a lot of people are introduced to new bands.
