no we don't, we choose to do what people say because there are long-term consequences if we don't. nothing in the world says you HAVE to things a certain way or listen to certain people. there is always a degree of free will in anything we do.

It depends on the type of freedom you mean. On one hand, that there are consequences to our actions does not eliminate freedom; on the other, it mixes with our will to survive and be happy such that we do not always act in affirmation of our full potential.

I think it's more interesting to consider whether free will is even a legitimate concept outside of spiritual philosophy. We tend to feel that we have free will because we make decisions given certain options, but the way things seem is not necessarily the way things are. Assuming, for the sake of argument, that there is nothing more than the physical world, how can we justify a belief in a power that transcends it?

i agree with that!! we always have the FREEDOM to do what we want....but we just sometimes choose what people says as there are consequences!!

Not really, it might seem like it. You can't just go into someone's house and take their stuff freely. You'd probably get jumped or shot..Or both.

what type of statement is that. If you look at it that way freedom was lost when people went from loners to clans and their was a leader to boss people around, but what about free will isnt that still freedom in apon itself

I personally think that freedom exists
you don't have to follow what other people say, rather stand for what you think is right

I think what is meant here by freedom is the ability to do anything that is possible for an individual in his situation (as opposed to there only ever being one possibility, given all preceding events) rather than to simply be able to do anything.

Freedom is having the choice to do whatever you want, as in you have the choice to go to college, but in some country's you don't, even if you want to. Freedom has nothing to do with going to McDonald's and getting Big Macs for free...that has shit to do with freedom. Whats free about that is you can go to McDonald's if you choose, so yeah your free to do whatever you want, there just may be consequence's for some of your actions (such as choosing to rape little girls or something)

we are pretty much free here than we would be in another country...not saying that the other countries are bad! (don't hate me!) but in the other countries, we would have a different type of government and that matters along with the other customs that they have...

I think this thread was made already, but whatever.
Freedom exists only within the confines of the law, and is more of a privilege than a right no matter what anyone says.

we don't have absolute freedom, we give up certain freedoms in exchange for peace and prosperity. this is whats called social contract, where the people give up certain freedoms in exchange for protection, law, and order from a governing body.

i think its better this way, though i'd prefer absolute freedom to absolute totalitarianism
