A 59-year old woman and her 72-year old partner have been named 'selfish' for having twin daughters through IVF treatment in India. The couple DO want to keep their children.
The UK refused the couple IVF due to their age, so they went back to India to get it. They then came back to the UK to have the babies.
They have been branded as 'selfish' because when the children grow up a little, they will have the burden of looking after their elderly parents, unless they are lucky. When the girls are at secondary school, their mother will be 71 and their father will be 84.
Now the couple want to go back to India for more IVF treament to get boys because the 72-year old father is desperate for a male child.
This has been described as cold and heartless. But what do you think? Selfish, cold, heartless and self-centred, or just a bid for your own children?

Koda Kumi would say: "No, after 35 the amniotic fluid rots lol"

I think that once people reach a certain age, like... that old, they shouldn't have kids. It wasn't meant for them, they weren't destined to have kids, that's what they have to accept... I pity their children terribly...

I can't say that they are selfish people for wanting children without including any parent who goes to that length to carry their own child. However, this has more to do with my stance on adoption and foster homes.

I can say that I do not believe they thought it out. As a woman ages, the chances of downsyndrome and other disabilities increase significantly- and I'm talking under 40, I can't imagine how a 59 year old would manage. Another consideration I do not think they planned was college fair- unless they are extremely well of (and, well, they might be) college is only getting more expensive. Even if they do manage healthy and able children, they might be holding them back. At the moment, my youngest brother is 6 and my father is 54. Even in this situation, which is considerably less of an age difference, my family is in a panic on how to pay for all of our educations.

Hopefully their memory, sight, and hearing are still intact. My mom is only 50 but her senses are already failing her, and it's annoying to have to repeat things all the time and constantly remind her of everything. Plus theres a higher risk of birth defects at that age, so yeah it's kind of unfair. If they really want kids it would probably be easier to just adopt.

In my opinion, they're too old to have those twins...soon, they can't even take care of themselves let alone taking care of the twins.....gosh!!!

All very good points so far.
It is based on opinion a lot. Some think it IS selfish and the kids are going to have to look after the parents. Some think they have right to have the children no matter what the age.

I dont know how to call them. However, they wont be able to physicaly handel bringing up 2 children. In my opinion any age is good as long as the parent is able to take care of the child the right way.

Little babies requier alot of attention, and Im not quite sure if those 2 elderly people can give to them. What if the child is sick and needs to be rushed to the hospital and the parents are not able to do so because they dont feel well due to their age? Its about thinking whats best for the child.

I do hope they manage.....

This is highly irresponsible and unfair to the children. It doesn't really matter whether they're selfish or not (I think they are); their choice has a good potential of harming the children.

The "we should be able to have children at any age" argument needs more support than that alone. After all, we don't get to go around doing whatever we want just because "we should be allowed." We need to consider both the actions and the likely results of those actions rather than the actions alone.

Yeah, if your going to have kids you should have them when you are young enough to take care of them. Yes your going to get older and yeah your kids will probadly take care of you(put you in a home XD) but you should give them enough time so that they can get an education so they can have a GOOD job by the time they need to take care of you.
