Both, but I was trained to play by note-reading. By ear is an arguous task, but it allows me to be creative and express my individuality.

wow!! can you teach me how to play be ear.... i can only do right hand.... not the left for accompaniment...>.<

I can't actually teach you. But a tip is to be playful with it. If it's waltz like, it can be repetitive ne? for the left a ccompaniment. the only piece I played by ear is Right Here Waiting For You. My own arrangement is kinda messy and it doesn't flow, but it was okay. At first I try to come up with the melody. Then, I try to combine the notes. For example, if it's mi, it sound good with do/sol, right? or even ti. So i start with that. Then I play the triplet separately to go with the melody. Get it? LOL! It's mixed up. And that's just an example!

thanks!! ^_^ it's very useful!! ^_^ my problem is that when i try to play accompaniment, it sounds kinda boring.... XP.. and repetitive.... i usually don't try a lot of combinations 'cause i'm afraid it doesn't match well..

oh... suzuki method is really cool ^_^... i know a bit about it... and part of the basics is that you have to listen to a song at least four times for you to "get" it... it worked for me even though i don't study piano formally... ^^ and you have to master the four (or five-- i forgot) variations on Twinkle twinkle.... i dunno if that's also practiced in other methods... but you're always given a CD to listen to for every song that you have to practice playing...
