erm... this group dont look as active as pre june but ima post this anyways.

The best advice I can give is, if you want to really learn how to draw, then draw from real life. If you can master real life, you can master manga. But it doesnt work the other way around.

When I was young I use to only draw manga n shit I never really got that great, i mean i improved every year but I would not really call it good cuz I sucked lol.

One of my cusins who is a proffesional graphic designed told me 4 years ago, to learn from real sutff and I never listened. Once i graduated college I gave it a shot, went to life drawing and drew real things, buildings, trees, people, and to my surprise it was working.

I'm not much of a refference guy unless i really wana make it really good, I still cant call myself that great of an artist cuz i slack alot, but I am decent enough an I do get paid for sketching concepts for comix n games n what not.

But anyways from manga to real life it was a hard leap, cuz mangas are simple lines, SIMPLIFIED FIGURES that they created from REAL LIFE FIGURES thats y i aid if you can master realism you can master manga but not the other way around.

Many artists out there refference off of real photos and just change the face and clothing, usually reference off a nude picture XD which i do sometimes.

Getting better at drawing takes alot of practice, hard work, and studying. U must study how light works, how shadow gradients into a figure, and remember the poses and figures in ur head so you can re draw them without looking at it again. Just like martial arts drawing can be learned and mastered, I've got a long way to go but I'm sure everyone has the capability to draw, it's not talent, cuz i never had one.

I cud explain more why starting off copying realism b4 anime/manga style but that wud just bore everyone. so ima show you all the improvement I've undergone, 1 year jump from manga/anime style - realism inspired. (INSPIRED cuz its still not good lol)

this is work from 2005 (sigh I am so ashamed.)

this is work from 2006 (still ashamed of myself.)

work from 2007... got a lil better

and heres one of my not so recent work lol

See the difference?

thus depend on its capability to overcome such task
...somehow..look at the basic..realism is not the basic..
shapes are the basic..
( literally a person good in realism have a good photographic memory)
~~ I started with my own will of patterns..doesnt need to follow alot of etc..
if you have the skil..use it well if you dont have..just follow some will that your hand can do

lol the reason i say to learn realism first is. becuz all these manga / anime artist, based their drawings on realistic images, just simplified, curves turned into straight lines, as well as the face they just stylized it so that it's way easier for them to animate. otherwise they would animate in the most realistic fashion, but if they do their workload would be 10x more cuz of the refferences they'd have to make. If you read mangas like berserk, gantz, chunchu and jackals, their details and frames are damn close to realism but still keeping the whole manga-ness in them.

true basic lines and shapes help but if u get ur mind used repeating he same process over n over it'll come out the way u want. Som great artist once said "u cant draw what you havnt seen." it's true to a point cuz u need the basic form to be able to re create and change the recreation process to make it your own. I still use the guidelines for the head, but i've grown from the guidelines for the body but sometimes i kinda have to for cat's eye perspectives which is pretty durn hard but yea.

these tips I'm putting out may not apply to everyone but all those artists that are now pro and famous, started with these basic steps of mastering realism, i've spoken to many famous artists that do comics n what not and they all say this very thing, otherwise i wouldnt have mentioned it lol. But yea if u wana make money as an artist, which i completely would say dont, unless u got mad crazy talent and can do crazy shit at the age of 17+ then go the hell crazy but some people just arent cut out for it and are/will suffer alot of starvation in the future lol. For fun wise go crazy with what u feel comfortable with, for Pro, get out of ur damn comfort zone and learn to prolish ur weaknesses. sry for preaching XD

i mastered realism when im just 10yrs old..and yah that apply to anime-manga,,
but as u say u cant draw what you havnt seen." ..
does it mean i can draw monsters and druid cause i see one?
does ralional.,.or irrational...
i follow my way..i dont apply to much realism on my creation..thou i can..
i like guntz and ghost in the shell cause they show realism..
but thier are alot of forte than realism..( there are majho.chibi..clamp..that does not literate w/ realism)
and dont worry i knew alot of things..
i work on manga studio..and i have my own sempai that says " Creat your new style than to follow others"
"as i see as i work..you need to create unique..beautiful and stylish drawing..or quite akward..people love it..
i love anime than marvle.drawings..
you may follow realism..but i follow my own way.." i wanted to be new and unique..not another "same as others"
and one thing i make money out of art...( im under age..i cant work on office..but i can work on manga studio..)
..i love to draw akwardness in a drawing..( like crayon chinchan..weird yet cool..)
