I have to go with Lynn Minmay. Her singing saved the universe. How can you beat "Do You Remember Love?" Plus, without her, we wouldn't have Ranka Lee.

Well IMO, Ranka Lee's got the best voice out of all of them, and isn;t that what matters most in singing? The ability to sing? I mean, sure you could probably argue that Sheryl is the best performer, but I just find almost a magical quality in Ranka's voice that just makes me want to listen to it over and over and over again (and yes, I am dead serious about that - I have been listening to a loop of Aimo ~ Tori no Hito for pretty much the last 3 days straight)...

As much as I like Ranka Lee, she is essentially a lot like Lynn Minmay. A young girl working at a restaurant who gets a big break andwhose singing can bring Zentran into submission. Yeah her songs are good, but they have nothing on the classics :-P

That was not my point though...My point was that when it comes to singing its all about the voice and the song. IMO, Lynn Minmay does not even come close in terms of purity of voice, singing abilities, ect. Plus, I was never a fan of early 80's pop...

IMO When it comes to that, I have heard a lot of Minmay songs that had that. Five in particular: Cinderella ( which was the song that got Mari the part), Ai Oboete Imasu ka?, Ai wa Nagaeru, Why? (The Lynn Minmay/Mari Iijima duet released during the 20th Anniversary) and Angel Paints. Ranka Lee's music is catchy, I like her rendition of Ai Oboete Imasu Ka?, Seikan Hikou, Aimo, What about my Star @ Folmo, and Cat Diary. I think that One of the things I think helped Minmay in terms of singing is the fact that her seiyuu was a singer/songwriter. Plus Megumi Nakajima is still fresh on the scene, she has potential and I can't wait to see where it takes her. She might be the second singer to launch from the Macross Franchise.

In terms of the Macross Universe Lynn Minmay still has an impact on singers like Nekki Basara. And I am sure Ranka Lee is inspired by her given that the song she picked for the Miss Macross Frontier contest was Lynn Minmay's debut song "My Boyfriend is a Pilot". Like Ranka Lee; Lynn Minmay was a natural singer who had an innocence to her and I think Ranka has a long way to go even get to the level that Minmay was ( I mean being the cause for a fleet of aliens to defect, and to follow that up with singing to stop the destruction of the human race) and her presence is still felt in the modern series.

Ranka has a long way to go to reach there. And I am hoping that they will give the character more original songs to sing than just singing of the songs Sheryl or Minmay has sung so well.

You keep throwing out a ton of points and I would tend to agree with many of them. HOWEVER, they still mostly have 100% nothing to do with what I originally said...The ONLY thing that you said that had any relevance to my original statement was this...

One of the things I think helped Minmay in terms of singing is the fact that her seiyuu was a singer/songwriter.

You might not be missing my point entirely, but I am not arguing character vs character or performer vs performer or comparing their significance of impact on the story / world of Macross...I am comparing them as SINGERS. Based off of my judging, Ranka is a better singer than Lynn (ie Nakajima Megumi is a better singer than Mari Iijima). Now that is based off of my own personal preferences, but then again that was the entire point of this thread...

Hahaha, I like this thread! Good debate going on. Regarding this topic, I'm only highlighting this as it's the only part that relates to what I want to say.

I really love Megumi Nakajima's voice, and it does have that certain something which makes it a better quality than the girl who sings Shreyl's songs. Hehe I've been playing Aimo continously too. I find Megumi's voice has a deep richness in it that the other singer doesn't. Granted, the other singer is also great, and I like her voice too, but maybe it's the clarity and pureness of Megumi's voice that wins me over more.

Like they say, music to my ears.

Wow just looking at the votes... Sheryle and Ranka are neck and neck!

Hmm I'm not sure I agree with you guys that Ranka's a better singer. She can't hit the high notes. Just compare Ranka's version of Diamond Crevasse to Sheryl's. There's a noticeable difference in technique. Also, her new version of Aimo was suppose to be a war song, but her voice is plain. It doesn't convey the emotions.

Minmay had the performance quality of Sheryl, the spunk and hot-headed aspect of Mylene, and a voice that was greater and more energetic than Ranka.

Don't get me wrong, Ranka's voice is awesome, but too mellow and sleepy for my taste - in addition a bit softer than most of the other girls, no crispness.
