Almost everyone I talk to has no clue about viking metal when I bring it up. Does anyone here know about it? If so share your ideas and opinions of it.

Tyr ftw!! Anyone listen to their lastest album yet? i've only given it one listen and it's pretty good but imo Eric the Red is still their best album

I guess it's kinda like this..:

any style of Metal (Death, Black, Progressive etc.) + Folk instruments +Folk-y sounding riffs + Norse Mythology/Paganism/Viking themes = Viking Metal

Haven't heard of it. But I suppose these bands came from Scandinavia.

Not all of them come from Scandinavia. Primordial are Irish but they write viking styled music. Darkthrone comes from Norway but that doesn't mean they play viking metal.

Viking Metal is awesome. The best bands are Amon Amarth, Týr, Turisas, Ensiferum (the music is viking metal stylish, but not the lyrics), Korpiklaani, Bathory, Enslaved and many more, but those are the very best, in my opinion!

I find it hilarious that no one here know what Viking Metal actually is.
Amon Amarth are not Viking Metal, they're Viking themed Melodic Death Metal.
Týr, Ensiferum, Korpiklaani and Turisas are not Viking Metal either. They're Viking themed Folk Metal.

Viking Metal is a style that is basicly Folk Metal and Black Metal combined.
Often also called "Blackened Folk Metal" or "Folk/Black Metal".

An example if this is the Norwegian one-man project, Myrkgrav.

Well. I don't care much for specific genres like Syndicaidramon goes on about. It's too technical, need to be more laid back!

I like Amon Amart, I can only think of 3 Inches of Blood's vocalist who resembles a Viking xD

I much prefer more folk metal, where as true viking metal is much darker, I would prefer to put on heidevolk, turisas, or korpiklaani, all of whom adamantly tell fans NOT to call them viking metal....besides, easier to drink and dance around to

I love all folk metal (viking metal is a subgenre of folk whether u like it or not) and it's good to see it get some respect and coverage. Amon Amarth are the current Viking Kings right now and I don't see anyone taking their throne but the glorious thing about metal is that there is always a band somewhere playing in their garage who are gonna blow our minds one day.

Actually, it's a subgenre of Folk and Black Metal fused together.
