Zhang Ziyi angry at ignorance of China earthquake

Zhang Ziyi in Rush Hour 2

Actress Zhang Ziyi became infuriated on her visit to the Cannes Film Festival when she met festival-goers who knew nothing about the recent Chinese earthquake.

The Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon star turned her Cannes trip into a fundraising mission to raise money to help the victims of the quake, which measured 7.9 on the Richter scale when it struck the Sichuan earlier this month.

Zhang made and handed out an information pamphlet about the disaster, which has left almost 60,000 dead and more than five million homeless.

Zhang made a personal donation of $US144,000 to help the relief efforts, and has also secured a $US100,000 pledge from media tycoon Rupert Murdoch's wife Wendi Deng, who was born in China.

The 29-year-old was shocked when she came across a group of people at the festival who were ignorant of world events.

"I was as angry as a madwoman," says Zhang. "I said: 'Are you idiots? You are well-dressed people who look like you identify with society, but you don't know what's going on on planet Earth.' It's incredible!"

Lyssa,

I think the China Earthquake on May 12 is being ignored or 'put-aside' for the most part. Sure, we heard news about it the first two weeks after the earhtquake but hardly anything after. What most doesn't realize is that so many lives were lost that day and that China is in need help from everyone. I'm glad and happy for those who are willing to help and still helping...

God bless China!
