Hey all!

It's time to have a look at the VF series of Variable Fighters! Everyone's a Macross Fan these days due to how awesome the new Macross Frontier series is like. The VF-25 is the next-generation fighter for the Macross Frontier emigration fleet, but there have been more fighters over the years. There are tons of variable fighters, but since CR only let us have 5 poll questions, I've selected some of the more memorable ones to vote for. If you have any others, post a picture and a vote, and we'll tally it all up eventually! Anyway, here goes!

(Post was duplicated on the polls board, but I wanted it here for macross fans to appreciate it)

Stonewell/Bellcom VF-1 "Valkyrie"

The VERY FIRST Variable Fighter, the VF-1 Valkyrie is legendary for being one of the longest-serving fighters in the Macross world. It also pioneered the use of armored FAST packs, was the first fighter to use thermonuclear engines, and was generally pretty much awesome.
Appeared in: SDF Macross, Macross Flashback 2012, Macross 7, Macross 7 Dynamite
Notable Pilots: Roy Fokker, Rick Hunter / Hikaru Ichijyo, Max Jenius, Milia/Miriya Jenius

General Galaxy VF-17 "Nightmare"

General Purpose Fighter-Bomber, the VF-17 pioneered the "V" wing type of variable fighter, is easy to use, and remains so popular that the Macross Frontier decided to modify it and use it as their front line forces as the VF-171. The VF-17 originally is a stealth fighter, so it doesn't normally use Super Parts or FAST packs. The VF-17 also has an optional Beam Adaptor that can be fixed to it's gunpod for happy destruction time.
Appeared in: Macross 7, Macross Frontier
Notable Pilots: Gamlin Kizaki

Shinsei Industry VF-19 "Excalibur"

Advanced General Purpose fighter, the VF-19 was supposed to be the next generation fighter, competing with the YF-21 for deployment in all Macross fleets. The VF-19 has a forward wing design, extremely high maneuverability, active stealth, and a fighter carried pin-point barrier system. It's highly conventional but highly effective. A custom version, the VF-19F, had speaker pods and a guitar-based flight interface.
Appeared in: Macross Plus, Macross 7, Macross 7 Dynamite
Notable Pilots: Isamu Dyson, Nekki Basara, Gamlin Kizaki

General Galaxy YF-21 "Sturmvogel"

Advanced General Purpose fighter, the YF-21 (and later, the VF-22 Sturmvogel II), was in competition with the VF-19 for the next generation fighter in "Project Supernova" on Planet Eden. The YF-21 was a technical marvel and had an ingenious Brainwave (Direct) control system, and Brain Direct Image system, and a pilot could pilot it by thought. However, due to the untenability of the design the YF-21 lost out to the YF-19 and was later refurbished into a more conventional system, the VF-22.
Appeared in: Macross Plus, Macross 7
Notable Pilots: Guld Bowman, Max Jenius, Milia Jenius

Macross 25 LAI VF-25 "Messiah"

General Purpose Fighter, the VF-25 was developed independently within the Macross 25 (Frontier) fleet. It's role is supposed to be the next-generation main variable fighter for the Frontier Fleet. The VF-25 is unique in that it can equip FAST and Armored Packs while in Battroid mode. The VF-25 also incorporates the EX-Gear powered armor system for it's pilots.
Appeared in: Macross Frontier
Notable Pilots: Ozma Lee, Alto Saotome, Michael Blanc, Luca Angeloni

I don't understand. Focker pilots a VF-1 and Basara pilots a VF-19, VF which are in the list, and you would choose the VF-17 ?

u wonder why? actually it quite simple. the reason i perfer their VF over the regular ones is because their verision looks cooler and also having them pilot it lol.

i chose the regular VF-17 because it's design uniquely shaped and it has stealth mode compare to the other ones.

I know I'm missing a ton, but polls only allow 5 questions, so I picked 5 of the leading ones.

VF-0 "Angel" was Focker's VF in M0
VF-19F "Fire Excalibur" was Basara's VF.
VF-11 "Thunderbolt" was the general purpose fighter in M7
VF-4 "Lightning III" was tested in MF 2012

Breia's VF is theorised to be a VF-27. There's no specs of anything on that right now.

But if you want to vote for something else, just post a reply :3

Among the choices... VF-25 However I do think that the VF-27 Brera pilots is also sexy...if it wasn't purple? It looks sexy... but it looks almost identical to Nora's SV-51 from Macross Zero... even the color is the same maybe that was the designers intentions though. anyways the VB-6 Konig Monster and the SV-51 should get honorable mentions

Other Variable Fighters in Macross:

Northrop Grumman/Stonewell/Shinsei VF-0 "Phoenix"
A prototype variable fighter rushed to service during the Anti-UN Civil War, the VF-0 Angel entered into combat towards the end of the Anti-UN Civil War. It had traditional fuel cell engines as opposed to thermonuclear engines of it's later successor the VF-1 and as a result had longer legs, where the engines were. The appearance of variable fighters on the battlefront changed the war considerably.
Appearance: Macross Zero
Pilots: Roy Fokker, Shin Kudo

Stonewell/Bellcom VF-4 "Lightning III"

The next generation general purpose combat fighter, the VF-4 was supposed to replace the aging VF-1 from service. It was superior to the VF-1 in every manner, however was only produced for 2 years before being replaced by the VF-11 Thunderbolt.
Appearance: Macross Flashback 2012
Pilots: Hikaru Ichijyo / Rick Hunter

General Galaxy VF-9 "Cutlass"
An inexpensive twin-engined light fighter typically sold to colony planets. The VF-9 Cutlass reportedly had higher maneuverability than the VF-4.
Appearance: None
Pilots: Milia Jenius

General Galaxy VF-11 "Thunderbolt"

Directly descended from the VF-1, the VF-11 Thunderbolt is an all-round general purpose fighter. It is good at space superiority as well as atmospheric combat. A special version of the VF-11 Thunderbolt, the VF-11MAXL Custom, was manufactured by Shinnasaku Heavy Industries to incorporate speaker pods, internal sound systems, and a bass guitar interface.
Appearance: Macross 7
Pilots: Milia Jenius, Mylene Jenius

General Galaxy/Messer VF-14 "Vampire"

Heavy Fighter-Bomber, the VF-14 is a space superiority fighter descended from the VF-11. Its design is supposed to be highly manuverable in space and it carries a larger ammo payload than most other fighters.
Appearance: Macross Plus Movie Edition

Shinnasaku/Northrom Grumman VB-6 Koenig Monster

Heavy Artillery and Variable Bomber, the VB-6 Koenig Monster is a beast of a machine, with Four Rail Guns, Six Missile Launchers, and one 30mm Vulcan anti-aircraft gun in it's chest section. It is typically used as an artillery piece.
Appearance: Macross Frontier
Pilots: Canaria Bernstein

General Galaxy/Messer-Varauta Fz-109 Elgerzorene

The Fz-109 Elgerzorene's design is largely modeled after the VF-14 heavy fighter attack craft. Like the VF-14 it has a distinctive design and is highly manueverable in space. All Fz-109s were in use in the Varauta system; due to the Protodevlin war they were taken over and used as part of the Protodevlin army.
Appearance: Macross 7
Pilots: Gigile, Gavil

Sukhoi/Israel Aircraft Industries/Dornier SV-51

Used by Anti-UN forces during the Anti-UN War, the SV-51 was created using stolen technology from the UN Variable Fighter development. It has a larger dimension and mass than the VF-0, however, due to limitations in technology, it has a longer transforming time than the VF-0. It also has a shorter cruising range than the VF-0. It also has active stealth and higher efficiency and output than the VF-0. This was because it was developed from the start to be a fully combat fighter.
Appearance: Macross Zero
Pilots: Nora Polansky, DD Ivanov

Macross Galaxy VF-27
A mysterious fighter with mysterious... mysteriousim. There are no stats revealed on this fighter, but it's presumed to be modeled after the VF-26, with next-generation technologies from the Macross Galaxy. If anyone has a cool pic on the VF-27, please post it up. Any more informaton about it would be welcome, too.
Appearance: Macross Frontier
Pilots: Breia

The choices are severely lacking in this one. My favorite Variable Fighter is the VA-3M "Invader" because of its powerful arm mounted dual beam guns and the fact that it is the only amphibious VF
