I'm a twenty three year old college student(*white, irish italian*), and if it wasn't for the fact that all of my friends understand that I just end up having strange hobbies, I think they'd be surprised too. Most of them know, though, that I just really love different cultures; I'm big into subtitled movies from ANYWHERE, even if its not from asia.

I love to listen to different languages, spoken(*my mom was an ESOL teacher, and I was always reading mulitcultural books, and I had muliticultural dolls..I owe my fascination to her*); and its cool, because you can actually really learn alot about the ideals and values upheld in other cultures from the stories they tell, and the stories they embrace. I mean, look at Korean dramas, and all of the tragic stories that would be waaaayyy to sad for america TV. tragic lovers is considered something pure, and beautiful, and eternal, where as in america, its less beautiful, more "what the heck! why isn't there a happy ending?".

most of my friends think its funny, and kind of a little odd, but they dig it- sometimes they even watch with me. I had a friend who watched ISWAK with me, and then started trying to learn mandarin (*b/c she wanted to be ready when the man of her dreams, Joe Cheng, showed up to sweep her off her feet. LOL*)

the last paragraph was cute, me too! i started to convert me friends a little bit, i got my best freind hooked to Fated to Love you, and now she like to watch it because it has an interesting plot XD

Anyone who looks at someone funny for watching foreign stuff is crazed. Ask those same people if they've ever watched a foreign film or even an anime? Then ask them if they watch any movies or tv shows where the main cast isn't of their ethnic group?

I'm willing to bet they will admit to having watched foreign films, some anime, and tv shows where the cast was of another ethnic group.

So I see it like that. It is crazy for someone to act all strange cause you watch Asian dramas just b/c you aren't of that ethnic group. I mean what are you supposed to do isolate yourself to only your own ethnic group? Well, you'll be missing out on a large portion of entertainment.

Well, I, as a non Asian, I must confess that I found many Asian actors as being absolutely beautiful! I don not mean just physically... What I can see, within their acting, is a deep understanding of their roles in a drama, and there is a specific sensibility of their gestures, eye expression, voice and movement, that you will rarely find to American and European actors... I think this is also a matter of culture, this Asian culture, having so many accents on human behavior an its expressions through an art "product'... as drama or movie.
I really like many Asian actors and actresses.
I am so happy for discovering this world of Asian culture. Thanks to all of you for uploading the movies.

ahah if only my freinds think the same way you do xD

OMG i know EXACTLY what you mean! My whole family thinks I lost it, and none of my friends would go see speed racer with me when I told them it was because I wanted to see Rain on the big screen. My only friends who understand ARE asian and even they think I go overboard. I don't know why it's so weird for some people that someone might be interested in foreign dramas and pop culture...

i'm a white girl and i am obsessed! so are a bunch of my white girl friends. I get the funny looks too and it is so annoying. I find myself getting tired of explaining why i watch them...(because they are 100X better than what is on American television right now)

you DO NOT have to be asian to watch asian dramas...

i watch them, and i'm not asian at all. i don't see why not. the western stuff is enjoyed by asians, so we can enjoy their sources of entertainment, yes? my friends think it's fugged up though, that i watch anime or dramas or even listen to music that's in a different language. they're close-minded like that.

I completely agree. Like (this is off subject). But the difference between watching a dubbed anime compared to a subtitled anime, its completely different. The american voice over is so ...bleh, they just can't match the emotion that the original portrayed.
And its the same with asian actors, the way they act is just incomparable.

My friends also think I am weird when I tell them I watch Asian dramas and movies. However, I think they will eventually come around and watch it. The same thing happened several years ago when I started watching anime. I have one friend in particular who could not understand my fascination with anime and constantly made fun of it. Now he watches anime, but only the ones on cartoon network (dubbed in English); he’s too lazy to read subs. I think eventually my friends would watch some Asian dramas, but I kinda wanna keep this for myself. I don’t want it to be come something that the kool kids watch just for the sake of watching it, not really enjoying the plot or characters.
