Hey Guys!

So I've been wondering this for a long time and I just now decided that I should post this topic so try to take it seriously ^_^. As a Pentecostal believer I believe in prophesy as one of the gifts that God gives to his people. After all, Corinthians identifies it as one of the spiritual gifts a believer is able to use.

I know that not every Christian denomination is into speaking in toungues, prophesying, and miracles SO! I want your opinion and insights!

Have you ever been prophesied to and/or what do you think about prophesy and so on...

I go to a Baptist church which doesn't believe in those things. But I myself am a very strong believer in the Spiritual Gifts. I believe in the Spiritual Gifts (tongues, prophecy, healing... and others)

In my life, I believe that I have heard a prophecy regarding a friend (it actually happened a few weeks ago) I told him about it too. I didn't hear a voice, or see some sign, I felt it in my heart very very strongly (I was brought to the brink of tears) and I believe in it. It was an amazing experience, but I can't fully describe how I felt.

I believe that God gives different gifts to different people. Some healing, some prophecy, some others. The Bible says that we should pray earnestly for the Spiritual gifts, and believe that we have received them. God is so good all the time!

Hmm. I cannot say I am an expert on the subject, I had a friend who could speak in tounges well at least she believed she could, and I beleive she believed she could. my point being I can't make rash decisions on scripture without studying up on it, then making an informed decision, as it stands, I believe it is possible but alot less so in this day and age.

Have you guys ever just sat in the presence of God and just felt him all around you? Or been led to a certain verse even though you never knew the reference? Have you ever listened to a song on the radio and KNOW that God is personally speaking to you? That's the Holy Spirit working in us, through us , and around us. He is our helper and our sheild.

You don't have to be pentecostal to experience the power of God in your lives or the power of the Holy Spirit. He can speak to us through the littlest things! People may study the Bible throughly and know every inch and corner about it but God isn't just about doctrine or traditions. People too easily put God in a box and mentally limit his power.

If God wanted to he could apear on this screen and speak to you personally or even make the sky turn purple! If he could do such "impossible" things in the blink of an eye why couldn't he perform miracles in your life, talk to you personally, or give you gifts of prophesy or wisdom?

Luke 11:9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.
Luke 11:10 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

I definately believe in prophecy. And the other Spiritual Gifts too. I've been told lots of miricles by missionaries who have gone to other countries and seen some with my own eyes.

I'm not sure if this counts as prophecy, but sometimes I have dreams and then sometime in the future they happen in real life. It's kinda creepy and very much day-ja vu, especially when I don't remember the dream. I'm pretty sure it's not prophecy (just looked up the definition...) but it's still sorta like it I guess...

I think it's kinda hard for a Christian to not believe in the Spiritual Gifts. But that's just me. I'm Baptist, and I've never once thought of not believing in them. I think everyone at my church has the same idea. We actually had a sermon on the gifts some time ago...

I am Baptist too, but my church denies spiritual gifts. They believe that they served a purpose in the early church, and that they don't exist anymore. We don't speak in tongues, pray over the sick, or believe in prophecy... I myself am a very very strong believer in spiritual gifts, but this poses a problem that I have... My dad is the pastor... I turned 18 two days ago, and I plan on going to a church that believes the same as me and that has a strong family unity in the Body of Christ. The only thing is, I haven't told my parents at all, they don't know that I believe differently than them, and they don't know that I am planning on leaving their church. But I need to tell them soon, I just don't know how too. I am sorry if this is off topic, but if anyone has any advice for me, I would appreciate a PM.

I'll pray for you.

Yah, you should definately go to the church with the same (or similar...) beliefs as you. I have a problem like that, except reversed. My family wants to go to a new church, but I want to stay at the one we go to now cuz my beliefs are like my church family's. I don't know how the either chuch views everything, though, so I'll go for a week or so, but I've pretty much decided to stay here... I'm just gonna tell my mom I'll go alone if I have to. Which I've done in the past, so it'll be nothin new. Off topic, sorry!

Speakin in tongues it talkin different languages, right? We don't do that in the church, (usually- a lot of my friends, who go to a different church by used to go here, spoke French to each other for practice) but most of us can speak in one or more languages, not countin English. I can kinda speak in tongues.. I'm learnin Spanish through school and Japanese, French, and German on my own! I think that might be one of my Spiritual gifts... maybe... if I havve the speakin in tongues part right!

Ok for those unfamiliar with the passage here is one exert from 1 Corinthians 14, which introduces spiritual gifts:
starting at verse:
13 Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray for the power to interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful. 15 What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also. 16 Otherwise, if you give thanks with your spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider [2] say “Amen” to your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying? 17 For you may be giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not being built up. 18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19 Nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

20 Brothers, do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature. 21 In the Law it is written, “By people of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord.” 22 Thus tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign [3] not for unbelievers but for believers. 23 If, therefore, the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are out of your minds? 24 But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all, 25 the secrets of his heart are disclosed, and so, falling on his face, he will worship God and declare that God is really among you.

HOWEVER, pay close attention to this verse from: (Acts 2:6-12). It would be in agreement with the command that God gave through the Apostle Paul, "If anyone speaks in a tongue, two — or at the most three — should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God"

So there are some examples of what scripture says for spiritual gifts, in particular the gift of tongues. Also keep in mind the devil and his minions know the scriptures, so unless you believe it is a spiritual gift, do not take anothers word for it. Um, I think thats about it for the warnings, just stay true to God's word and study up on it.

And spiritual gifts are gifts, the Lord giveth the Lord taketh away. haha, ok im done.

Ha ha ha, well I just think everyone should be weary of the "spiritual gifts". A lot of people propose that they have attained them, but in actuality, they have not, or have been mislead. So just be cautious, a lot of people can be lead astray along the lines of miracles and spirituality. Scripture says it should be used in a certain way as well. So I wouldn't truly accept someone proclaiming they had spiritual gifts if for instance there wasn't an interpreter. For example, I went to this one church, I ended up liking it a lot. However I had my doubts, at the end of one service, they left the congregation and focused on one person who was "speaking in tongues", now I am not an expert but the emphasis should be on preaching the word primarily, to "cancel" the rest of the service, leaves me very skeptical, my final viewpoint, is I believe that some if not all the spiritual gifts are of the past, i.e. prophecy in focus. Why would we need another prophet, when the bible has already foretold everything we need to know.

Haha I totally understand what you're coming from cry~ It is indeed a very good idea to be wary of Spiritual gifts. For example I know a lot of people that take their spiritual gifts overboard and into the realm of "annoying" but in reality spiritual gifts are an essential in every Christians life.

Spiritual gifts are meant to "build eachother up" and help other believers in their times of trouble. The problem with people that speak in toungues is that they usually don't think of others around them. In reality when you speak in toungues it's supposed to be a communication between you and God. You're not supposed to be freakishly lound or emphatic because the Holy Spirit it NOT a spirit of chaos but a spirit of unity and helps us get closer with God.

BTW: The Holy Spirit is part of the trinity and therefore God so treat Him with respect! The Holy Spirit is NOT a thing!

I'm definately not an expert either but prophesy is something that is sometimes needed in church because there are many people that don't express their problems or struggles outloud a prophet can counsel another person after God tells them what to say. I'm a HUGE skeptic of prophets and I've only found a few that I believe. If you want I can tell you later how to distinguish a true prophet from a fake one. (sadly there are people in the Christian world that make up stuff for profit)

Remember the spiritual gifts are meant to help others and help the church grow stronger in unity. If you find a person with a spiritual gift that isn't helping the church as a whole grow stronger in unity then you're not dealing with a spiritual gift at all but with a "wolf in sheeps clothing".

I had doubts about entering this topic because it's a little hard for baby Christians to follow but I hope that you guys understand everything that I'm putting on here and if you have any questions I'll try my best to clear up any confusion you may have.

I want to go into more detail but it would be wayyy to long for one post so I'll wait ^^.

Thanks! Ruki ^_^

Ok I believe I already know, but for the sake of missing a step if you don't mind could you fill the others in on differentiating the false prophets. And I know what you mean about the baby Christians, but its topics like these that help our brethren grow. When in doubt pray it out. also if you have any backup material or resources rather could you share them, I would like to better understand the spiritual gifts myself.

I found an awesome website that explains everything. I think it might be a little to "written down and exact" but some people like it that way. Also just because something is on there doesn't mean you have to believe it or just because I say something it doesn't mean that you should follow my teachings right away . Pray about EVERYTHING before you choose to believe ANYTHING. lol that was my disclaimer ^^.

Ok ok I REALLY hate to do this but I'm going to put wikipedia down as a source. It's not totally credible and it gives Christianity a bad name most of the time but it's incredibly easy to understand.

Any more questions?

For diffenentiating between false propthets, religions, and Christian sects, the Bible has ALL the answers!

In 1 John 4, John wrote,

1 John 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

There are more verses but I need to look them up in my Bible. This will have to do for now. I also found some websites that look ok. So feel free to take a look!
