Has the gaming community died?

No, the gaming community is not dead. As long as people are around, games will be made with people to play them. Seems like everyone's too busy complaining what's popular all the time and how the gaming industry ought to be. Video games, as well as movies, music, etc. usually make profits on what is familiar more than what is new. Hey, it's what the majority buys and what drives companies to keep producing similar stuff over and over. As a gamer I personally don't like it, but it's just the way things are. Tough crap. Hasn't stopped me from just enjoying whatever good games I can find, although it's few and far in between.

Criticizing things never hurt anybody, voicing my opinion and your opinion is just a normal thing to do amongst a community, I still enjoy good games when there presented to me, its just when there's nothing to play because I have is finished, and I'm broke, and theres not much games to choose from so 1) Cry about being bored or 2) Entertain myself on seeing everybody's opinion on how the gaming community and industry's state as of today.

I'm fine with sequels.
But the number of "original" games being made, compared to the number of sequels being made is ridiculous!

I agree that the big name companies need to try and let some new idea's flow (I think they can at LEAST afford a few "test" projects).

Games tend to be dictated by sales, so that is when orginality tends to die out. Once a company finds a winning formula with a game, they are going to stick with that. This explains series games like final fantasy, and halo.

But for final fantasy series I can tell you the reason I end up buying them even though I find some of them to be mediocre, I'm a graphics whore.... The CG's always look so nice, that I end up buying it, which is how I ended up with Dirge of Cerberus. This game makes a lovely frisbee, but I gave up playing this thing within five minutes.

Of course, because my idea's are not, "Dude, screw you, this is the real world, company's need to make craploads of money, I for one love pouring my money into there pockets for doing the same thing over and over, and will never want something new, EVER, thats just dumb, this old things make money, NEW IDEA'S!?!?! Hah, you can't make craploads of money off a new IP!" I will probablly get flamed, but if any gamer out there who played on the 16 bit and ealier, miss's there originality in there games, and not just having like 3 companys bring us stuff like Killer 7, No More Heroes, Team Fortress 2, and Portal once every to long, what do you think is the current status of the gamer community?

Dude your awesome. Those were the best games of all time (portal, killer 7 and no more heroes). I also liked F.E.A.R. (has some nice touches to the gameplay but is not completely original since it rips of the "slow down time" effect) until they tried milking it with expansion packs (no real originality except for a few features).

Other games which have great originality could be system shock 2, deux Ex and.....thats about it lol (not much unfortunately).

I think everyone should play portal because you can't say anything bad about that game (because there isn't anything bad about it). Except that it is short. But that is about it (its not repetative and newly innovative gameplay with lots of humor). Its the most original game out there in this day and age (in my opinion)

I second that, go buy the Orange Box now. Portal may be short, but its 6 hours of win, and unlike other things, were the "multiplayer makes up for it" In the box your given HL2 HL2 ep 1 and HL2 ep 2, ALONG WITH TF2 for multiplayer, this box is full of win, buy it, you will not regret it.

For me F.E.A.R was pretty good, it was trying to be like a Japanese horror movie and at parts it did a good job, so its not so bad.

I meant more like a "dead inside" kinda thing rather then nobody plays games, which would just be down right stupid to say. Like whats happened to most music today lol.

It's not just in video games...Originality is a rare commodity in any entertainment medium these days.

What are you talking about?
Hollywood is releasing a bunch of "original" movies this summer....with the exception of the following.

- Iron Man
- Sex in the city
- The hulk
- Indiana Jones
- Get Smart
- The Happening
- Postal
- The Strangers
- Chronicles of Narnia
- Rambo
- Speed Racer

But Seriously, WHAT THE FUCK!?
Are they just not green lighting original projects? Or is there really just NO more creative people in Hollywood!?

It seems like NO entertainment medium is taking chances these days! I've been forced to spend my summer doing things...outside *Shivers*.

I hear you, man. If it wasn't for muay thai and jiu jitsu training, I would be consistently bored.
