So far from all the comments.. only a couple of people answered my question and gave me insightful comments. Thanks.. and for all of you who said "Who care?" Well I care, so I wrote a topic and yeah I wanted to read more insightful comments than that.... . If you guys notice I asked the question if they give proper rights to the original creators of the manga... I didn't say they did not give credit. I'm suspicious cuz in the taiwain music entertainment there has been a lot of reports of plagiarism. Guess that is a different story tho. Anyways, I just feel sad for taiwanese directors that they have no good script writers and they feel the need to borrow other people's work.

btw I hate taiwanese dramas.. not cuz they are remakes of manga but I hate the way its directed. Too much dialogue. Unnecessary sound effects. Background music that does not connect with the scene. Poor acting. Non-attractive actors/actresses. I hate it when a girl speaks mandarin in a shrilly squeaky voice >< and most of them do.

I'm bored. I'm gonna make another topic..

taiwan sucks and can't think of their own ideas. good forum.

probably cuz they don't have to think of a good plot... it's already there, and there are more opportunities to exaggerate everything. it's great entertainment!! dramas like meteor garden and devil beside you are super big hits!

was this thread created to bash taiwanese dramas?
im pretty sure the producers have permission from the authors to use storylines from mangas, otherwise it would probably be all over the news.
in addition there are taiwanese directors out there that do not rely on mangas. Take "Fated to Love You" and "Prince Turns into Frog" for example. They are both original stories and they have the highest ratings in taiwanese dramas.

i think they do pay for the copyright.
If you guy have notice it during either the start or end of the tw drama that copy from a manga during the song.
they do show its from which manga or drama that are taken from.
For example It started with a kiss or mentor garden they do show it at the start of show or end. (it may because the sub just dont show it)
If you guy do buy the orginal set, its written at the back of cover.
Do you think they are that dumb if they did a copyright and still state it during the show?

I understand that manga is really popular in Taiwan. But are all the storywriters in Taiwain dead or something? Can't they make their own storyline for once or stop borrowing from Japan? Where's their own creativity? To me, I feel like the people who wrote the manga are cheated. It's a lot of work put into drawing the manga, making up the storyline, publishing it.

It's another thing to remake something if you're a fan and your actually honoring the original work but it seems like they are just trying to make $$ by taking other people's work. I dunno, I just feel kinda irritated about it cause about 80% of tawainese dramas are from manga. It just doesn't feel right to me. They also copy the storyline 100%, It's much harder to start from stratch to make up a good story than just take someone else's story and write a script which is basically 100% the same. -_-.

I know Japanese dramas are based off manga but that is a given, since manga originated in Japan. They put their creativity in the drama and even add/edit scenes not in the manga. Some fans don't like that because it's so different from the manga. I'm pretty sure they give proper credits. They are big on copyright issues. Like that incident of that korean singer Ivy being sued for using Final Fantasy graphics in her mv.

Also another thing, do Taiwanese people even get permission from the original author? or pay them $$ for taking their work. They copy like 100%.. I dunno about Asia but if they did that in the USA.. there will be a lot of copyright issues and lawsuits flying around if they didn't give proper rights.

I totally agree...that's why I mostly watch Jdramas...because they are Waaay better!! Plus Jdramas don't copy the manga 100%...

I dun really mind...as long as the drama is good

But i think comparing with taiwan and japanese dramas tat are based on the same manga..... I think the Japanese version is better

I mean look at Hana Kimi... no offence but hana kimi Japan is like more funnier than Hana kimi Taiwan .... and the actors there can ACT!! ( Sorry i'm not really an ella fan )

except for Meteor Garden and hana yori dango... both are equally good to me hehe

i think copy isn't the right term otherwise it would be plagiarism, adaptation would be more fitting and of course it is stupid to assume legalities has not been settled prior to filming.. with this, manga writers have more benefits they are not ''cheated''.. they get to be known outside of japan meaning they are being paid more meaning again it is a bigger achievement on their part eh..

honestly, i even prefer the taiwanese versions of meteor garden and hana kimi anyway.. plus MARS..

at first that one was an issue for me. Anyway, I know it's not just the TW who gets pop. from the mANga remakes, but the JP as well....

But it's sad that the TW dramas that became pop. are those derived from Manga series; it seems also that they're too independent with the original story of the manga that if they won't follow it everything would get lost.
But i really don't care of their remakes---let them do as they wish (sad, but it'd deteriorate their originality)

I'm not racist, but iMAo..I don't think TW Manga live action are good---it does'nt suit their culture...that's why (for me), even though the JP don't have such Hot actors like those of TW, the JP can fairly give justice to the manga because they know what they're making...As for the Tw----they still have to rearrange things to fit the story to their culture, but then still--stick to the manga's story (it's really difficult this way)

obviously, they like to put up TW live actions of mangas because it's the one which is more preferable and more popular than their own and original Tw dramas (w/o manga influence);That's why, they don't care that much for originality;
also TW manga remakes are mostly idol dramas..e.g..they'd put up a not-so-talented-but-so-good looking-star to attract viewers and put up that star into a very cool manga character.....B)

I agree that the Taiwanese DO pay for the rights to base their dramas on manga (otherwise I'm sure the Japs would sue like crazy)
Hmm, it really isn't a bad thing if you think about it, because by producing dramas based on manga, they are actually helping to publicise the manga. The manga authors will benefit A LOT because T-dramas are watched all over Asia.
That's not even mentioning the money they get in return for the permission to use their storylines

wow my post was hella old and someone quote it. I forgot all about it. lol.. oh yeah what is up with the directing? Do you guys notice the different styles of directing for Taiwanese dramas? They put sound effects that don't belong in the scenes and use slow motions too much. It annoys the hell out of me. They also try to make the audience laugh with their silly jokes that are not even funny.

its cuz they lack creativity and the right actors/ actresses to put out good dramas that are original... thats not to say that the copied ones dont suck cuz they do

Yes, I do agree with you that Taiwanese people copy their drama story lines from mangas, but not all of them. There are actually lots of original storylines out there, believe it or not... I think they only copy 30% from manga story lines. I can give lots of examples of GOOD Taiwanese dramas that are not copied from mangas:

Rolling love
Marry me!
Fated to love you
KO one
X family
Romantic Princess
Brown sugar macchiato
Bull fighting
Bump off lover
Corner with love
It started with a kiss
My bratty princess
Reaching for the stars
Silence
Smiling Pasta
The rose
Why why love

Ofcourse they give the original story&author credit! I don't think Taiwanese people are plagiarists unlike some country I know...(Ahem, Indonesia)

umm it started with a kiss is based off a manga itazura na kiss
but taiwanese base their ideas from mangas and japanese drama such as remakes like: it started with a kiss, hana yori dango, hana kimi, and more.
but i don;t consider it plagiarism

what matters is a good and solid storyline. that's why they adapted manga storylines for their series. they know those manga series have many fanatic- fan followers and that translates to good tv viewership. anyways, all are winners, the producers, the original author and the audience because all depend on each other to make the series a success. the original author gets paid for it, of course. the producers gets back his returns and the audience gets satisfaction. all benefit from it.
