You're fine with the 9800gtx I plan on getting a 9800 myself unless the new card is somewhat close in price.

Why start a thread about a majority of anything else then?
In the long run most other topics would follow along exactly the same path as you just stated.
That being said, I didn't ask you if it was worth him starting the thread. I asked you why did you even bother posting if you don't even care about the subject?
I'm assuming your motive was just get 2 "points" added to your CR Profile.

From what I've heard and seen, the 9 series is a joke. Before, a 9800GTX might have been fairly decent, but now it's quite redundant, and I'd recommend it only for die-hard fans of NVidia who are trying going fairly budget. Or maybe stick with an 8800GT and go for a second one when upgrading is necessary, probably a better deal than touching any of the 9 series.

Personally, I'd strongly vouch for the ATi HD4800 series over the GTX260 and 280. The GTX260 is easily out-performed for it's price, and devastatingly fails as, I guess, a budget version of the GTX280. Last time I checked, the HD4870 was only slightly more expensive than the GTX260 (the 1gb version), yet (at least I'm quite positive) it absolutely rips it in performance. According to some benchmarks I saw, the 512mb HD4870 is very competitive against the GTX260, at times only coming close to it, other times actually beating it. Just looking at that, whilst bearing in mind the GTX260 is much more expensive than the 512mb HD4870, the GTX260 is completely ruled out of the game (unless of course you highly favour NVidia but repelled by the GTX280's massive price tag).

The new OC'ed version of GTX260 that has been released, however, I'm not quite sure on it's performance but I vaguely remember that it is indeed quite an improvement, one that may enable it to regain it's place into the market. Not sure about that, however.

The HD4850 does a much better job at being a budget yet well performing card compared to the GTX260. It's much cheaper, almost as cheap as a 8800GT (I think), and can hold it's ground against these other big cards I've mentioned. Personally, I'm impressed beyond belief at this card, and it's just that much more of a bonus that it's price would enable 2 of these cards put in Crossfire to wreck some massive havoc. The 1gb version of this card is yet another bonus, giving it more future-proofing capabilities for it's already very acceptable price.

The GTX280 is, however, the strongest out of all these cards, whilst also holding it's position STRONGLY as the most expensive one. Buying a GTX280 is the equivalent to buying an aeroplane to go on an overseas trip. That should pretty much sum it up. For the insanely rich who have absolutely no care for money, this is the card to get. Heck, get a good motherboard and buy 2. Or 3. From a slightly more normal point of view, this is assuredly useless.

So after all this, I figured the best performing card for it's buck would be the 1GB HD4870, which is what I recently bought. There was only one slight problem in that the card tended to run at some fairly unacceptable temperatures, but with the introduction of the 1gb version, some brands implemented an improved cooler as a solution. PowerColor shoved a massive fan onto the card, whereas Palit put in second fan (and an extra cooling tube?).

I wrote this for fun.

I have a ati hd4850 nad I hav to say it's a great card: no noise, no excessive poweruse, and it's nearly as strong as the gtx260, but costs "only" 150 euro or something. I am glad i bought that one instead of the nvidia cards i had in the past.
