Post Reply Iljimae Criticised for Slow Progression
Posted 7/23/08
Actually I'm glad that the writers took the time to lay down the plot correctly... the only problem I see is that the series is only 20 episodes and I'm not sure if that's enough time to play out the story and end it properly :\

I'm not surprised if the storyline progresses slowly.
And that Iljimae doesn't appear until later on in the show.
but I like it like that.
and it's not surprising either.

The show has such a deep story.
Obviously, they'd need a lot of time frame.

And about the 20 episodes, even though I'd want more, I don't think it'd be possible.
They obviously spent so much money on this drama taking into account the time period setting and they'd need to spent a lot of money for the character's costumes, props and everything. The whole project is costly.

although i love the slow progression, i think iljimae would still be just as good if iljimae appeared one or two episodes earlier, then there would still be time for plot development and later have time for the rest of the story to play itself out.
i'm currently waiting for episode 17 (waiting on the subbing team to come back from their hiatus) and i am pretty concerned if everything will have time to play until the end

What might seem like slow progression to those of us used to american tv, is in reality laying the ground work for what is a very complex plot. Without the backstory it would be impossible to keep track of all the character relationships and how they are connected to Geom-ee/Ryung-ee. Although I did find myself wondering when Iljimae was going to show up, once he did it felt as though the timing was perfect.

I like the pace and there isn't any filler, everything is in a perfect place, ties together, flashbacks aren't overused. I quite like the ending previews of the next episode cuz it doesn't give away any storyline, it just makes you want to watch more.

it may b a lilo slow in showing iljimae, but wat i liked bout the drama is that it show the progression of yoong transfering into iljimae, the reasons y he first started stealing, which slowly but surely changed into something else, some more moral, universal reasons y he kept being iljimae!!! it's very beautiful!

well, the story was developing so slow until i went to watch finish the whole drama....but yea, iljimae dosent appear much in the first few episodes...they tend to focus more when he is not iljimae, even when he appears in the future its not very nice....he becomes a full fledged iljimae only in the last few episodes...

The beginning was quite slow, I was waiting for Iljimae to appear. ^^ But overall the storyline was great.

Actually, I would be just fine with this drama if Il Ji-mae was only a minor character who made short appearances. For me, the important part of the story isn't about the Phantom Thief at all; it's about an oppressed, angry people slowly learning they can stand up for themselves, and the corrupt government that is falling apart trying to keep them down. That seems way more interesting to me than just watching someone steal stuff, no matter how good he is at it.

That is not to say I have any complaints at all about the show; It's my favorite period drama EVER!
