Racial Comments of The Rich and Famous
Posted 11/19/07
(First, I checked out the discussions over race and I think I'm in the clear, if not, Just lock this.)

These days in the United States, it seems that more and more people that are highly regarded and constantly in the public eye are making more and more derogatory remarks to an individual, a group, or an entire race based on characteristics of or by stereotypes of that race. And the offenders aren't just Caucasian either. Some people even degrade their own race in comedy and everyday music and television.

I want to know what are your thoughts....
Should Don Imus have been fired?
Should Dog the Bounty Hunter be penalized?
What do you think of Kramer's comments?
How much of this should be tolerated?
Are people making this a bigger issue than it is?

My thoughts:
Personally,I don't believe Imus should have been fired. (mind you I am a Black female) What he said was no different than what Black women are called on a daily basis in music, media, and real life. The only difference is his color and he happened to say what he said in the public eye which apparently wasn't a good idea. However, I do think he should have been penalized, but I think him losing his job was a little harsh. (Not excusing what he said)

Also, I don't believe Dog should be get in trouble at all. If anyone has heard the conversation, I don't think he meant any harm by what he said. And that conversation was private. He should not be penalized for what he said in a private conversation. If so we all should be a little worried about what information we give over the telephone. And I think his son was wrong for selling the conversation to the media.

That's enough from me now.
What are your thoughts?

I agree with you on the Don Imus and Dog the Bounty Hunter.

Are people making this a bigger issue than it is?

Yes, most of the time, when it's a white person committing a crime to a black person, it's automatically seen as racism, but when it's vice versa, it's nothing, but a normal crime.
People should judge people on their actions rather than their skin color.
The US media seem to always make things bigger than it is.

That's all I can think of so far.

I am black also and I do agree don imus shouldnt have been fired but maybe suspended for a few days. I dont like how the black community blows up whenever they hear a white person say something like this but a black guy can say it with no problems at all. As if we accept degrading ourselves but wont allow others to do it. My thoughts is if we dont want people to talk to us that way we need to stop talking to each other like that.

I love how you complain about racism, then say "And the offenders aren't just Caucasian either."

And I do agree with Jachina. In this country, a gang of young black men can go out and stab a white man to death and it's not called racism at all. If a group of white guys knock a black guy around (not even killing him!) it's regarded as racism and they get time for it.

Lol this thread will defiantly get racist against blacks soon talking about all of our problems but before that happens not all blacks think it is ok to be racist towards any other racist. When I hang out with my buddies and I have a white dude with me if any of them calls him a cracker I snap on them. I dont give a fuck if it is a joke becuase if his ass cant call me a nigga then we going to show him the same respect. Ok back on topic Oprah winfrey on light of don imus case owned a lot of the hip hop producers lol. But what I find sad is now there are rappers dissing oprah on their music and this is truly sad.

well, technically that's not true. Take the Jena 6 for instance. it's really the other way around. Around my area ( which might be becuase I live in the south) Whites do all kinds of things to black and don't get in trouble for it. As soon as the blacks retaliate they get in trouble. Not justify what the jena 6 did.

In case you dont know the story of Jena 6:
Basically there was a "white tree" at the school. Only whites could stand under the tree. When blacks starting hanging out under the tree, the white students started hanging nooses on the tree. Some conflict came up and I heard something locally, (which I'm not too far from Jena) that a Caucasian guy had brought a gun to school and might have even said comments against the black guys. Well, six black guys decided to jump on him. He wasn't even hurt that bad. He went to the school function that very same evening. But the 6 black juveniles were put in Adult prison. One MIcheal Bell was in for almost a full year.

In the US, everyone has the right to free speech so they can say whatever they like. However, you don't have to endorse or listen to them and eventually they fade away.

Well, not all black people but sadly the majority. I am told I act too "white" because I choose not to follow the majority. My parents taught me better than that.
