This came up as an off-topic discussion in another thread recently and I would like to hear peoples opinions in more detail.

In short here is my initial opinion:
Right: Burn victims, boosting self esteem, severe heart risks (obesity)
Wrong: Teens that are still developing wanting to use such a drastic measures to change themselves, choosing surgery over a healthy lifestyle.

Sorry that it's a bit vague but feel free to argue your opinion ^-^

I dont agree with it but I feel that if you want to get it and have the money, then you should have the right to do so. I only agree with it if it is for medical reasons (such as a burn victim)

^ i understand what you mean but i think, in this image conscious society, people have begun to accept that how you look effects your life. Some people, for example, feel shy and depressed because they have a big or strange shaped nose. After having surgery though, they feel happier and more confident.
Personally I dont like that but if it makes people happier then i suppose it can't be all bad.

I don't disagree nor agree to it. But then just look at the signs...horrible effects of malpractice and Michael Jackson...

I know many people who have had facial reconstruction done to them and they said it made them happier in their lives which I think is just plain pathetic....A few of them have even said that it makes them see many other flaws in their body that needs to be redone....Again completely pathetic.....

I think that is an important point! Many people see 'problems' with their looks that aren't obvious or noticable to others. People can also become 'addicted' to plastic surgery as it is makes them feel better about themselves and more confident.

What i do find annoys me, is when people become so obese that they get plastic surgery payed for by the health service. I t just doesn't seem right. Also, it can't help much can it? Surely just removing the fat wont help them get over their eating disorder or live a more healthy lifestyle?

I don't really think there is a right or wrong concerning plastic surgery. It's their body and with our technology they can reshape themselves' if they really wish. Whether if it's just a person with a flat chest not feeling as womanly as they'd like to, or someone who is completely addicted to chiselling every aspect of their identity, it's their choice and it's not hurting anybody.

Being addicted to plastic surgery is stupid, but not bad. If you're rich and are like that, go for it. A person who can't stand to look at themself in the mirror because they don't find themself attractive should be perfectly okay, and in my opinion you shouldn't call them pathetic for being human beings.

Reconstructive surgery - go ahead. Burn survivors etc.

Cosmetic surgery - Depends. Have to have sound reasons that, 1) it won't negatively effect your health, 2) will look better then before (sometimes it doesn't), 3) Was worth the money. Don't have a lot to say here really, don't particularly like dealing with vague terminology in "right" and "wrong". I'll note that as technology advances cosmetic change will probably be more common and may be more drastic.

Overdone, but looks better then before in most ways imo:

Plastic surgery is wrong/pointless only when the person hasn't worked hard to be a good person on the inside. That's what should come first. These superficial quick fixes aren't helping anyone. It probably hurts them as a human being in the long run.

Well I think boob jobs and face jobs are wrong.. That just means your getting old.. >_>

But burn victums..people who have been shot in the face.. etc is okay.. And also people with really ugly faces.. Other than that nobody should be going under

THat's sorta like saying, "If you have the money, why not go out and buy crack, or build yoruself a meth lab?" Reconstructive surgery is fine. They aren't really changing anything, just putting back what was lost to them due to incidents beyond their control.

If you have the money and the will to alter yourself because you think their ugly but nobodyu else cares... then just go and find a support group and join a gym or weight watchers or something. If you think that your breasts are flat... then stuff. Don't get surgery for it.

Right or wrong I can't say but I will say that having a 90 year old woman with a giant non-sagging chest seems unnatural to me.

i don't think plastic surgery is right. people should love themselves for who they are and even if you really need surgery, it can always go wrong
