Thank you slashdot for finding all sorts of random stuff. Anyway, yes you heard it right Japan is issuing a fat tax, http://idle.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/06/24/1420217&from=rss. There is a video included in this article.

My thoughts, FREAKING SWEET America needs to do this, that way we can make our way towards universal health care.

It would have been a great success, but according to Anime there are no fat people in japan (atleast no fat girls and 1% of guys).

I think its a good idea, having to give up money if they don't would definitely inspire people to get in shape, but I don't know about putting all that tax on the shoulders of the employers...

"Um, sir?"
"Yes Barnlebee?"
"Um, my name is Benson. Why did you dock half of my wages? There's no way I can manage to pay all of my bills and still feed my family on this measly sum."
"I'm sorry Barnlebee, but with this new fat tax I can't afford to pay you your usual salary. Look at it this way; the less money you have, the less food you buy, the quicker your family gets skinnier, and the quicker that tax no longer applies to them. Which means that I, and in turn, you, make more money. Starvation is the key, my boy."
"Thats awful!"
"Your only other option is unemployment so I suggest you get used to it real quick."
"I mean, thats a brillant idea sir! Turning a negative into a positive like that, just terrific sir! Just terrific!"

Not really, the main reason for doing this would be to make sure the government can continue to afford the health care it provides. After all a fat person is more pron to health problems than a skinny one. But yes this is a preemptive strike

I think thats a GREAT idea! Everyone in the world who are fat should pay fat tax.
Maybe then, can they start doing something about their fatness. >__>

so tell me.. How fat do you have to be to pay fat tax?
The video, if you managed to get to it, said that if your waist line is bigger than 33 in, for guys, and bigger than 35 in for girls you are fat.

But yes we should all start paying fat tax. Nothing gets you motivated like losing money

Yeah I agree putting all of the tax on the employers is a bit unfair. But in japan, as far as I know, they can reduce pay whenever they want. I think it would be to hard to do it on an individual basis. Mainly because it would cost more money to make sure everyone went out and go measured. Rather than must telling a company "HEY do this or we will fine you".
