I doubt the American version will be as good as the Japanese version. But as long as it promotes Death Note, I mean after all, with an awesome story like that there's no way they can screw it up... unless Zac Efron is Light. Lol. I don't hate him, it's just that I don't think he's "Evil" enough with the complex sides of personality as Light. Zac Efron is good at acting a typical jock or lover, not an evil genius mastermind.

I wouldn't like to see Zac Efron as Light. Hopefully they choose other person.

I say a big NO to Zac Effron. If I had a choice I would say Joe Jonas but thats just my thoughts on the matter.
If they do indeed make an american Death Note they better make it good!!

ya know, i don't really understand all the venom being sprayed at zach efron as Light >.>;;

the main arguement against him is his career attachment to Disney starring in stuff aimed at 12yo girls... because he has had limited roles, he can't possibly be good enough to handle a "complex" character like Light (who would actually be simple to play as he has two very defined yet entirely separated personalities).. let's look at this for a moment:

1) the role of Light does not actually require a master actor :-/ Light is internally complex, but outwardly has only two basic modes: nice guy Light vs psychotic Kira. I'm not sure how they are going to work all the internal dialogue into the movie, but voice acting is easier/cheaper to produce than film, so if he does screw up it'll be easier to repair during production.

2) Disney... everyone here seems to want to tear this kid down for doing so much on Disney channel, but ask yourself this: How much money does Zach Efron have before he can legally drink? odds are, he made more money before he could drive than any individual commenting here will make in their entire lifetime (incl. myself ^^;;) Admit it, if Disney Studios called you up and said "We will pay you $3mil to be in this movie. All you have to do is wear a neon green tutu while tied up in japanese style rope bondage and hop around on your butt while mooing like a cow."... you would sign the contract XD Money is powerful enough for John Travolta to force thru "Battleship Earth", and enables me to eat. :P

3) who knows, maybe the kid can act? >.>;; tho i feel that for this role, everything will come down to the eyes... is mr efron capable of making the viewer believe that they are seeing a window into hell he goes Kira-mode and looks into the camera? XD i dont feel like looking up his filmography, but unless there are any attempts at serious horror/suspense roles, it is too early to cast judgment. it is difficult to judge the acting ability of ANY disney channel stars tho due to disney's target audience not being the best to catch subtle roles.

4) what is the prejudice against disney here? is this about moral or ethical issues of their theme parks and business practices? or is this nerdrage because disney only makes crappy cartoons for kids?
... if your answer is the latter, then you are hereby reminded that our beloved anime is also targeted mainly at kids, is frequently crappy, and is the exact same medium as american made cartoons >.>;; if you feel the desire to argue semantics on this issue, let me ask you this: doesn't your back cramp up after a while with your head up yer ass? ^^

let's drop the elitist BS and look at what really matters about this production: Will there be boobies? <,<
