I start rambling about the news or science.

I was rambling on about human facial features and attraction to my friend, and the whole time he just stared at me until we both started laughing.

lol gets really awkward when they clears their throat or hums a song.
then, i'll be like "STOP MAKING THIS MORE AWKWARD!!" in my head

well, usually i'll start talking about the people surrounding us, like "Wow, that kid is short for his age" or something like that
then, a conversation begins~

I will say "Why so quiet?". That will break the silence.

It's only awkward if you say it is.

Whenever I meet someone who I haven't seen in a long time and an awkward silence occurs, I always end up saying "sooooooo" even though I don't try to. I just can't stand there being an awkward silence, so I end up initiating the conversation even though I'm usually the quiet one.

It's awkward because people expect to be voluble in conversation. This encourages empty convos and usually stupidity. I'd rather make fart noises until we have something genuine or funny to chat about. Nothing wrong in looking at each other then looking away with silence.

I enjoy people who can take silences with dignity and not look to others to say something. Silence can be golden if you can sit through it.

Just like how people are taught to not speak if they don't have anything good to say. If you're not a comedian, then stfu!

But seriously, I'd rather stay away from motor-mouths. They tend to talk more than they think, and for all they say it ends up resulting in a mess of ridiculously incomprehensible mouth noises.

At least they make a nice distraction while you go off and do something else.
