It has 4 romances, but 2 main. Because of that, i can not come up of a decently lengthed description.
[Kanon] has the same kinda of idea.

Its about a boy who comes back to a village but happened to have forgotten everything. He slowly meets the friends from before and realizes that he was really important to them. His friends went through many hardships while he was away.(Watch Kanon 2006. not 2002. They're the same thing but the drawings are done differently)
[Air TV] is also a sad anime. Its pretty unique compared to other plots. I seem to have forgotten some of the information about it though so no description.
[Clannad] is a sad anime but it was more interesting near the ending. The beginning half-ish was weak imo.

It is about a girl who meets a boy. She begins to write a play about being the only person in existance. In the play, the girl builds a robot companion. Back in reality, she wants to present this play to the public, so she created a drama club in her highschool. The boy helps her create this drama club and get participants, which also happen to be the girl's new friends. Therefore, she is no longer alone.
[H2O ~ footprints in the sand~] was also really well done.

It is about a blind boy who moves in with his uncle. When he first went to school, he was very popular with the girls. One girl caught his attention though. She was bullied by the other students. This anime goes through the hardships the girl faces to be accepted by others and to live peacefully.
Each of these animes had romance, drama, and they were pretty sad. Some were sadder and had more drama than others.
