Marrying people only in their community, and marrying people that of their culture are two different things. There are really no veracity in your words, considering how you're comparing the population within a culture to the population within a community. I love your sarcasm, but I also love your ingenuousness.

This thread is still going? o O

I feel like you're trying to imply the Amish don't have a culture, or that there's only one community of them -- unfortunately both statements would be false. So I'm not sure how you're trying to argue that my example is flawed.

But I'm glad you saw and liked wut I did thar!

(And if we're attempting to point out errors in each others posts, two extra points for you if you spot your own grammar mistakes!)

Amish people aren't going to travel to another state for marriage, even if they do so, the numbers would be low. We can assume that the majority of an Amish community only have marriage among their themselves, within that particular area. When I talked about "culture", I was implying something more vast.

Pardon me, but is it true that Amish people don't utilize any modern technology?

(Marrying people only that of their community, and marrying people only that of their culture. Yay, two points for me!)

It is true, the Amish are known for their reluctance to use modern technology! This does not necessarily mean they shun it altogether as they are stereotypically depicted. They mostly shun technologies that create a reliance on the "outside world". The levels of prohibition vary from place to place.

But more importantly, explain to me how the definition of culture changes as it's scope and influence becomes larger! I do not understand.

I see. But do they travel using cars or planes, or is it a rule that is under the standard prohibition?

Their culture is accumulated only in a community. Such community would mean a very low portion of population. When there is such a rule as marrying people only of their own culture, the possibility and probabilty of marrying a person who has an existing gene is highly plausible.

I know for a fact that some (most, I'd say, excluding only the very extreme communities) use cars, not quite sure about planes. I'd have to look that up, but I'm not feeling up to that right now.

And no, culture is something that can be shared across many communities. As such, the Amish do strongly encourage marrying only within thier culture, but because there are several Amish communities, the number of possible partners is acceptably large.

Many, if not all of us, are related to one another at some point in history. This is irrelevant though for the same reason that it's considered "safe" to marry a second cousin. The genetic shuffle has passed the threshold of similarity that exists between brothers and sisters, etc, so they're about as genetically different as any other non-related individual. Which means, their chances of being mentally retarded are about the same as the rest of ours.

Do you know the reason why they encourage marrying only within their culture? Or why they prohibit the use of technology?

Same reason most other cultures encourage marrying only within their culture; it's what they're comfortable with. I believe I've already touched on why they prohibit technology, but to go into a little more detail, as far as I know, it's mainly to keep themselves humble and unworldly. They also don't want to become overly reliant on things that are, frankly, luxuries.

It's a lifestyle very similar to those of some other religious orders, e.g. monasteries or nunneries.

First, I want you to understand the distinction between education and intelligence. Being uneducated doesn't mean an individual is unintelligent. Second, I know for a fact that the Amish do wash and are concerned with hygiene.

Illogical? How so? They're living a life that they find fulfilling and enjoyable. I'm not sure how you're even trying to make the claim that because their lifestyle preferences don't coincide with yours, they're retarded. The Amish lifestyle is completely voluntary -- those that don't agree with the lifestyle leave.

But all this aside, I'm pretty much done replying to this thread due to the lack of objective points and laughably hypocritical world views.

I was reading the whole thread before I replied, and this coming right after what you'd said previous literally made me laugh out loud.
