Not so sure about this, but doesnt the US draft citizen soldiers as well?

Anyway, not every country can afford to have a fully professional army. It depends on the existing political situation, population size and whether it has the resources to support.

It's almost impossible to draft people into the military. By the time the US Army is drafting people were in some huge war and need crap tons of more soldiers then we already have so we basically take all the young men and have them fight. Which isn't very smart to do unless you HAVE TO, because it can lead to economic problems.

oh, and i think the last draft in the US was during the Vietnam War. as far as i know, we don't use drafts here..we have this thing where males at a certain age must register for the something-something service system just in case a war breaks out....different from a draft.

maaan, if only i paid attention in history class.

We do use drafts, all males 18 years old have to register so if there is a draft we serve.

In order to keep neutrality or to avoid attacks from clearly hostile and militarily powerful enemies,a country needs a powerful and well regulated millitia,if the swiss decided to drop being neutral,or if north korea became south koreas ally, then mandatory service would be dropped but until then it is still a mostly necessary thing to have.
