Are these stories really so good that you're willing to endure two guys making out and proclaiming their love for each other? If you're uncomfortable with that sort of thing, then you must also think it's weird. Right?

For the sake of complete honesty I should say I've never watched a yaoi anime; I'm just not adverse to watching one on principle if I were to find the story interesting. But it's hard to sell me on a pure romance in any context to be fair.

As for the discomfort, it's definitely there. But I see that as a flaw in my own subconscious biases/worldviews. I'm kind of picking at it tentatively here and there; it's something that I think is wrong with me as opposed to with them.

(Italics added for emphasis only).

So basically I think I'm the weird one for being weirded out over something I believe isn't actually fundamentally weird.

I find it annoying and unnecessary. Most of the time, these romances really feel like they've been shoehorned into the plot.

Exactly! I don't like that either.

Um... for example. I'm easily twice as interested in Genshiken this season because of Haru's cross-dressing and potential gender identity crisis. Because it's handled in a level and respectable way in a larger universe.

It's not the focus of the show and it doesn't skew the story, it's just part of his her character within the larger cast.

I'd like to see more characters in more stories like that.

Edit:

I'd also like to think that I think that if something makes me uncomfortable I'd rather think more about it than less. Because it probably means there's a dissonance in my worldview somewhere and it's something I should straighten out.

... I hope that sentence made sense. I'm not sure.

I love what Insomnist wrote there! Wonderful response.

Okay, since the worldviews of 13-year-old otakus everywhere rely on this, I'mma give my two cents here and hope it reaches out to everyone.

Y'alls can watch whatever you want to watch. You can watch a show about girls falling in love because it has a good plot, or you're really emotionally invested in the characters, or whatever!!! Repeat after me, your interests do not dictate your sexuality.

Seriously.

Also, I saw someone really reassured by the fact that people were telling them they could watch yuri and be straight, and say something along the lines of "oh thank god I'm normal." Do I even need to spell out what in that viewpoint is so poisonous? Everyone is "normal." Stop with the heteronormativity xoxo.

I wouldn't think so. It is entertainment. People should be able to watch whatever they want.

No, you're not gay/bi/whatever if you watch it... If you're a boy and absolutely LOVE yaoi or a girl that loves yuri, then that may be a different story.

A girl doesn't have to be lesbian is she watches Yuri and a guy doesn't have to be gay if he watches Yaoi. You could just be bi-sexual or someone like me who is straight, but watches Yuri anyways as long as the plot is good enough. Watching girlxgirl hasn't changed my sexuality, I just watch it for fun and if the series is good Besides, there's nothing wrong with with being lesbian or gay when watching yuri or yoai......so I don't see the problem at all. As long as you like the series you are watching, that's all that matters right?!

Silliness. Watching something for entertainment value can't possibly determine your sexuality. Unless it's porn. Now, if you watch gay porn, yeah, you're probably gay. But, if you watch gay anime? Unless it's hentai, and you get aroused, no, you're probably not gay.

Wow...I'm a girl that likes yuri and yaoi both.
What does that make me?

Either that or you just:

"Do, what you want to do.
Be what you are..."

Who? Let Hall and Oates in here?
