http://news.aol.com/story/_a/critics-fear-collider-could-doom-earth/20080628165609990001

It has a one out of million accident rate, still even if it's primarily safe for experiments. Why bother risking the Entire Planet's Life just so Scientists can hope find signs of the invisible "dark matter" that makes up more than 96 percent of the universe. A ghostly ring of dark matter is shown above in a faraway galaxy. The collider could also find evidence of extra dimensions. Who gives a shit, even most people who did the Poll as myself disagree:

http://webcenter.polls.aol.com/modular.jsp?resType=7&popup=yes&pollId=144671&channel=aol_us_news9&view=144517&template=1381

The Point is it shouldn't be made if it's going to be risky and besides people shouldn't try to be like God sometimes you know. Physicist Stephen Hawking, seen in April, predicts that even if the collider created micro black holes, they would instantly evaporate. Yeah well let's hope so he's right if God Forbid the Machine messes up.

Well people of CR what do you think of this?

I think the risk of destroying the Earth has been massively exaggerated by reporters looking for some dirt to write about.

Ridiculous, say scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, known by its French initials CERN - some of whom have been working for a generation on the $5.8 billion collider, or LHC.

"Obviously, the world will not end when the LHC switches on," said project leader Lyn Evans.

David Francis, a physicist on the collider's huge ATLAS particle detector, smiled when asked whether he worried about black holes and hypothetical killer particles known as strangelets.

"If I thought that this was going to happen, I would be well away from here," he said.

Who to trust? Reporter or scientist actually working on-site?
Coming from a slight physicist point of view, I call shenanigans. People should be educated on what actually happens, and the risk that is involved.

To be honest, I highly doubt it. It seems too exaggerated for my taste. I think it was only to make the crowd get all panicked. Jeez. "Believe none of what you hear, believe only half of what you read". But, for the sake of this arguement, it shouldn't be made. Not worth the risk.

what are the scientists going to gain if they keep up their research? why don't they direct their energies toward global warming or alternatives to oil?

Being said dangerous wouldnt you want to give them the benefit of the doubt? All this black holes and atomic theories is purely a ruckus, bah.. go ahead..doomsday isnt far ahead with all this global warming..

The new collider? The possible creation of the "strange" molecule? Ha ha ha what the hell not like any of you people know any science, and if you did not like you could/would stop this experiment from proceeding. For crying out loud, the testing of the atomic bomb was criticized because people believed it could burn out Earth's atmpsphere in a chain reaction. Not like any serious action was done to restrain politicians from geopardizing the world. And the collider is a different story. GET A LIFE!

I think the creator of this topic is a conspiracy theorist. I think I remember a thread about man made earthquakes or something

Actually I'm an Investigator Of Conspiracies and no this is DEFINITELY NOT A CONSPIRACY BUT A REAL MACHINE. Hopefully To God it won't fuck up, and even if it does God Forbid, I hope the Black Holes disappear like Stephen Hawking says.
