art is in the eye of the beholder. so why get so pumped up?
it's up to them who thinks that photography is an art or not. you don't really have the right to shove them whatever you're thinking.

but in my eyes i do think photography is art. for me an art is just a product created from your passion, and it really takes passion to be able to catch some stunning, unthinkable pics :3

ps: for those of you who are ranting against girls liking yaoi, i dont see any connection about their preferences and the talk about 'photography is art'. so get a life.

Art is doing something well, I'd say. Photography is a person's ability to capture the beauty of what is seen in real life. Drawing, sculpting, painting and whatnot are limited to what we can come up with in our minds. People who bitch about photography as not being art need to take their heads out of their asses.

I am so sick of these little feeble-minded maggots with their 10 year old mindsets. Photography is hard, I've seen my friends do it who are good at it. I'm horrible at it; but I gotta say I feel bad for photographers because they have to deal with so much shit from other people. Like take for instance, "Oh its just taking pictures, its not art." *bitchslap* IT IS ART! Just because they aren't drawing or painting something does not mean that it isn't theoretically "art". Many people have a different definition of art. Photography is hard! I don't think people realize this concept. Its not only editing the photo. You also have to make the perfect scenery, make sure you have enough light, and enough shadow. A good hue of color etc. Its more than taking pictures and its harder than these so called "art critics" say it is. I am so disgusted with this mindset. I think they we should take all these ignorant, illegible, sad excuses of artists and give them a photography boot camp. Let them see how hard it really is. Maybe they'll actually have something to whine about. I am just so tired of all these "faingirls" getting credited for their creepy yaois of sonic and shadow the hedgehog. Or their sasunaru bullshit. But if a photographer takes a picture of a cute, cuddly, kitten, or a beautiful girl in an elegant dress, they get no credit whatsoever. Because some n00bish maggot feeding off of the juices of roadkill has to step up and say "Its only taking a picture." Well lets see you try it, try putting up with a model who is a bitch who yells at you for taking the picture of her "good side" wrong. Not to mention all the asshole film directors that will be rubbing it in your face and saying how they make more money than you. Which is sad, I find more symbolism in photos than I do in movies these days. All the movies are beginning to suck now. Pfft, going postal? They should change the expression to going photographer! I wouldn't be suprised if a photographer who had a bad day came into a photo shoot and killed 20 models for all the crap they put up with. I really appreciate photography, I really do, but I would never have that be my career. Not for all the money in the world. Too much stress, makes being a postman sound easy.

Actually, even professional photographers get their shots, they still use software programs like Photoshop to enhance the details, contrast, and quality of the photos.

Cameras can't tell what is white. You have to program/tell the camera what is white.
All color digital cameras use 72 dpi (dots per inch) for their default resolution.
The very best digital screen of a computer holds 16,700 colors.
The very best printer [today] holds 7,000 colors.
You can actually see the discrepancy between the two.
The thing you see in the screen is not what you will get in printing [CMYK/RGB].

Example:

Comment I wrote in deviantart:
This pic is too dark. It's not even sinisterly looking. It looks like it has big rectangular block at the bottom. Use adjustment layer "curve" in Photoshop to differentiate what's white and black. If you don't, it's like a pic where you can't see a woman wearing a white wedding dress while the background behind her is also pure white. The only thing you would see is a floating head of hers. That's bad. So yea. Fix this pic.

If you check out the link, all of the comments are positive, except mine. It's constructive criticism.
All of their comments are so repetitive.

B&W photos nowadays are so overuse. What? Are you afraid to use colors? pfft.
If a pic looks whack, what people do is change it to black and white and hope other people will see the photo look classy. What the hell.

Art is abstract.

So yeah i would say there is no definite definition on whether or not something is a piece of art.

...its good ur ranting and expressing ur anger instead of mercilessly killing people... it is streesful but if they hate it why are they photographers then....dont mind the hate its their opinions...

Photograph Definitely an Art, it's require a lot of skill, my mom very bad at taking picture and she always made the pics blurry and at an angle where the picture is hard to be seen. (I never want her to take my pic) =.=

i agree with one of the earlier comments photography isn't art it can be art just taking a picture doesn't make it art it's about the perception of the viewer and the intentions of the photographer i have seen some photographs that were amazingly artistic though taking a picture is still photography that doesn't make it art, art is a form of expression anything can be made in to a form of art depending on how one perceives it.

I'm an amateur photographer~ Saving up for my first actual DSLR, mMmMm. And not to take myspace pictures and whatnot!

Photography is art. It's capturing life in a way that no one else but yourself can see.. you take these pictures to share with others so they can see things from your perspective. It's not so hard if you have a photographic eye but recently, I've been just a bit blind :'(

It definitely is art. Art is the product of human creativity, yes? It's creative because somehow, through different aperatures and different shutter speeds and awkward positions a photographer finds themselves in to capture the moment, lines can become beautiful, shapes can become something majestic, form is suddenly the definition of life, colour breathes life into objects, rhythm is pulsing through the picture, unity ties everything together and just..

I don't even know! Photography is just s0o0o0o amazing. I appretiate it so much. I don't understand why people would underestimate it so much..

to put it all in summary: everything is subjective. we can thinkg of anything as art even if it wont be perceived as art by others.
i forgot who said it but he was a famous dude in psychology and he did say that "reality is subjective."
so im guessing the way we live our lives, see things and experience things are subjective and cannot be applied to others.
so photography can be art for me but not for others.

I don't take pictures - just evaluate them. I tend to lean towards photos of really good-looking people in their most natural state because that's so hard to find, IMO. Especially since most models and actresses seem to be all about obtaining a certain image. I think I like them so much because it is such a rarity for me. I consider THAT art. But like the guy above me said, it's pretty much in the eye of the beholder.
