I'm not sure you'd want to be a graphic artist. I've worked in the industry for nearly 20 years in the business. The job in and of itself is really different from what it was twenty years ago as far as the technology, but some things stay the same. Unless you are very good at taking orders from people you don't like or you don't agree with at an artistic, professional or client level, don't do it.

Think of your least favorite teacher - the one that always harped at you, gave you bad grades, seemed to pick on you. Now put that person in charge of whether or not you get a paycheck. I've lived like that for a long time - in fact, I was ordered to work this weekend. If I don't, I will be fired, even though I have a huge school project due on sunday night at midnight. If you don't like criticism (and mean criticism at that), don't become a graphic designer. You also have to sometimes put aside any idea of what you like and do what the customer wants you to - even if the design they want is a bad one that isn't going to help their business. From what I've found, there are certain graphic design jobs that are very hard on a person emotionally and creatively and the less control a designer has over their design work, the more unhappy they tend to be. Most of the designers where I work don't really like what they do - it's just something to bring home a paycheck and health insurance. They do the stuff that makes them happy on therir own time. If you don't want to work as a corporate artist, then you can always freelance. But that comes with its own set of headaches. If you freelance, you'll find that unless you have some steady clients, the work will be sporadic and you may have to go after people to get paid. I once had to sue a woman to get paid the second half of my fee. You have to be prepared to fight for everything and unless you know deep down that its what you want to do and you know WHY you want to do it, don't do it. While I'm all for people doing artwork and expressing themselve through it, trying new things and developing their abilities, all of that changes when you do it for money. it is no longer your art - it belongs to someone else and they get to make the rules. Once you do your art for money you are bound to the rules of the marketplace just like an accountant or a bricklayer or an engineer and it becomes just another job to endure.

Now, if you can't see yourself doing anything else and are willing to eat, breath, sleep and do nothing but develop your illustraton and design skills, go for it. I'd get at least some formal training, but it's more about who you know, rather than what you know sometimes. Oh, and everything about production shifted to digital circa 1995, so more and more of it is going overseas to India (at least from the persective of someone in the States). Since I'm not exactly sure where you are, you actually might get some of the work coming in from the outsourcing going on with the companies here, but it tends to be the boring, production stuff, not the work that the art directors or agency creatives do.

Okay, enough of that. You can tell I'm just a tad burned out. As far as the design for Hyuga goes - Very nice! - I can see why you fangirl Hyuga. It is a nice side to see, especially since he's pretty harsh in the anime most of the time (or at least ridged in his outlook). I'd say keep the colors onthe cool side, but you might try working with some of the masks for the background, to add some depth to it. I'd try playing with a couple of the layers. In CST, you might try marbling the background using the Liquid filter - brings up a separate mini program where you can create marbled textures. Create a selection of the background behind him with the magic wand tool adn put that on a layer below the main part of Hyuga's body and the cloth. Within that selection on the separate layer, start painting at random with the big fluffy brushes with a combo of dark green, pale gray, a little light blue and just a touch of black (not too much - it will overwhelm things). then bring up that selection in the Liquid filter and find a medium sized brush and just fingerpaint with it for a while in the program. Eventually, it will start to look like Italian marbled paper. Then, on the layer above that (once you get the effect you want) do another layer, load the same selection and do some shading from dark gray (and a little of the color of the blanket, depending on what you choose as a base tone) and create the drop shadow manually with one of the big fluffy brushes (100 pixels or larger) set at 60 percent opacity. As it gets closer to the body, the shadow should deepen and get darker. If it seems too dark, then reduce that particular layer's opacity, until you get the gradient you want. So you'll have three layers - the marbled background the dshading in the middle ad the lower half of the picture on the third Let me know if it works out. Nice job on the shading on the eyes - gives the some depth without taking away from the 'anime-ness' of the piece. The only thing I see when I look at it is the perspective on the arm with the hand closest to the viewer. Am I missing the forearm, or is that just hidden under the blanket and disguised with the foreshortening?

oneesan! ^^ you made me reconsider my dream job! hehehe... ^^ maybe i should become an artist instead... but my parents won't approve of that~ >< by the way, i'm from Indonesia... and i'm studying dentistry (very faaaaaaaaar away from graphic designing!). i have submitted a few portfolios to a few design companies though... starting my career early... ><;;

i did the background as you said, but can't get it done like i want it too, or like i imagined it... >< what's wrong with me?? >< i really hope you can color this with me, neesan~ maybe in your spare time? ^^;; hehe... i want to see how you will color it...

and sorry about the arm! i forgot his arm!!!!!! T.T

i redid it with photoshop (can't bear to re-pencil the arm and re-scan the whole thing!) :

Yeah - Liquify is a cool little filter - I don't get to use it much anymore at work, but it's really more of a fine art thing.

Gimme a couple of days to take a look at the drawing and see where and how to handle the color. I think I know just what the issue is with the hands and the positioning - it may only take some shading, resizing the front hand and adding couple of lines :-) Hyuga's hand needs to be just a little larger - the hand is usually the size of the face, when the fingers are spread out and should be a little bigger to give the viewer a sense of perspective withthe foreshortening. I can Photoshop some of that at work tomorrow :-P (I don't want to work tomorrow!) and see what I can come up - I only have Phtooshop 7 at work (they haven't given us new software in over 7 years) but some of the filters are not there in the newer versions, so I want to check out a couple of differences.

BTW, as far as the game goes, how does Hyuga's personality differ with regards to the game and the anime? I know you aren't watching the anime, but apparently Hyuga gets seasick easily, according to one source commenting on eps.3. Odd for a man that like seafood. Strange dif, no?

ah i can't wait to see you color it oneesan! ^^

about personality, hyuga in the game is more open, not so strict, like in the anime. in the anime he's more like a robot or we can say... a bodyguard for angel. but in the game, he's more like rayne (although he never gets angry at angel the way rayne does!).

rayne likes the sea, hyuga likes the mountain. he doesn't hate the sea though... ^^;; jd loves the sea... nyx is forever afraid of the sea because he was drowned there...

Well, that explains the part in the anime about Nyx underwater. In the game, is he entirely an Thantos on the inside wearing a young man's body, or is he a human infected by one of them who is trying to suppress it long enough to try to fix the problem (or get Angelique to fix it once she becomes Queen)? You can put the whole thing into a spoiler tag if necessary. I'm not sure where the anime is going with the whole 'Nyx's condition' thing. They did upload a sub of 4 (thank GOD for tranmoonlight! - I'm beginning to want to grab people who are whining on the wall about the lack of an episode and point them to the place where it says that a 'subbed version of 3 doesn't exist - its like they won't or don't want to look for the answer... Or can't - I don't know which.) It's the episode dedicated to Hyuga's backstory, so you might want to check Eps. 4 out.

I won't be on CR for a couple of days, as I have a big school project due on Sunday night and I only have two hours left to get some files to my professor in order for her to check the coding and the statistics software. Since I was forced to work today, I have two hours, instead of 10 I did work a little on Hyuga, - decided on darker green for some of this - he'll stand out nicely against it, I think. Did a little of that at work today on my break. :-)

See ya in a couple.

i haven't downloaded ep 3 and 4 yet ^^ my internet won't move! hehe... i'm not even sure if i want to watch it... *sigh* i really wish there will be a manga for neo angelique abyss... >< i don't like the anime pictures... not as good as i imagined it would be...

in the game, nyx doesn't turn into a tanatos. the tanatos is inside him. and he becomes something else. something evil. but when they has defeated him, he turns back into nyx. ^^

There is a manga, but I ran across some of the scanlations that had been transcribed into English from Russian. The manga I looked at isn't part of the main storyline - like a filler episode. The scanlations aren't all that great either, though you can get the gist of it with the badly translated English. I believe it focuses on how things are in the game, but the style is really... sugary is the best work I can describe it.

Eps of 3 and 4 and now 5 are out in the Raw from Zero-subs - just look for the proper torrents on utorrent or bittorent. 3 is easy to understand, 4 is a little harder and I'm still trying to suss out what's going on in 5 (looks like Rene and Bernard's backstories get completed at this point - Yay... and Mathias proves he has some serious issues to deal with). Correct me if I'm wrong but the title of onii-san (aside from the familial relationship or 'older brother') can also be used as an honorific for a male older than oneself, someone categorized as a good friend or a friend of the family, but not flesh and blood, right?

Still working on Hyuga - class ends in another three weeks and then I'm totally on vacation. For nearly a month. I'm tempted to take another week off unpaid, but the hubby would probably frown on that. I'm hoping to forget what I do for a living. How was your holiday.

yes, both oneesan and oniisan can be used for siblings and non-siblings (older men and women). ^^

holiday? ^^ it wasn't a holiday here, neesan, hehehe.... i think the manga images are better than the anime, though, but you're right, the story is totally different. it's like a doujinshi... ^^;;

i'll be waiting patiently for your hyuga, neesan~ ^^ in the meantime, i might upload more vids from the game...

Excellent - I wasn't sure if the animations from the game were anything like the anime versions of key scenes. I was wondering if the only animations came at the end (a reward for finishing them), and that if the CG illustratons were the 'collector items' you received as you went down a partidular path. Is that peculiar to Koei's games, or is it true for other makers as well?

Up late again, running software. Have to be at work an hour earlier tomorrow :-P so I'm trying to run these as quickly as I can, download them and then do analysis. And sadly all I want to be doing is watching anime, playing with the birds and goofing off. never take a mathematics oriented class during the summer - the mind just doesn't want to compute ANOVA charts and regressions when the sun is shining. Not that I see the sun much these days, but I hear it makes an appearance during the summer. Only three more weeks of this.

^^ the video needs to be approved before you can watch it, neesan~ ^^ we may have to wait several hours more.

KOEI usually take ideas for otome games from people outside their company. then they will pay a team to adapt an idea into game. they have several teams for this. and then, when they want to make it into an anime, they will hire another team, this time from their anime division... ^^ if they want the manga, too, they usually contact the original idea creator. ^^ and the creator will draw the manga or choose a mangaka to do it.

CG images are usually given as rewards when you have fulfilled certain requirements... ^^ in KOEI games, usually there are more SECRET images that you can open when you have finished ALL the characters within the game. so you can't just go after one character. you have to go after all of them ^^ this is fun if you have a lot of people playing with the same memory card. one player can go after hyuga, another can go after nyx, and so on... ^^ and when everyone has finished, they can sit together and watch SECRET videos and CG images... ^^

ah... ANOVA charts... i forgot it ever existed... lol... ^^;;

Interesting take on multiplayer vs. single play for a dating game. I hadn't actually considered the multiple player aspect of it - I'd assumed that, as in real life, there was a time limit for each of the scenarios the player needed to work through and that since ther was only one female player characher, you'd be limited to one person, at least for this game. The main arc Angelique games allow for more that one player, I think.

Home briefly for lunch, then back to the dungeon for another four hours of fun. The supervisor is gone today, so I'm working on Hyuga as well as homework, in-between ads. I also have a parrot on my shoulder at the moment who has just tried to help himself to half of my lunch (I did not know that macaws loved onion rings this much - I'd have bought him his own bag *not*) so I need to go rescue my food

yeah - I can definitely see the difference in the gameplay between the haruka seris and this one. Chibis! Fighting Chibis! Still, it is cute :-)
My husband plays first person shooter war games on a mass server and used to admin for them and I'm so used to watching PC gameplay just this side of watching first person war footage (blood sprays, looking at the gameplay stage from the perspective of someone who has just been shot i.e, looking up at the sky, pretty realistic) that fantasy gaming with magic and power levels and an inability to dodge seem strange. This is definatly marketed at girls - even the monsters are pretty :-)

I think that after this week with school things will calm down a little and I may actually get to draw something. Started in on Hyuga's hair today - I meant to ask - on the drawing - there doesn't seem to be a light source, so I'm shading as if there is a bedside lamp or a very strong candle offstage. Hope that's okay.
