The human whose name is written in this note shall die.
This note will not take effect unless the writer has the persons face in their mind when writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected.
If the cause of death is written within 40 seconds of writing the persons name, it will happen.
If the cause of death is not specified the person will simply die of a heart attack.
After writing the cause of death, details of the death should be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds.
This note shall become the property of the human world, once it touches the ground on (arrival in) the human world.
The owner of the note can recognize the image and voice of its original owner, i.e. a god of death.

That's not all the rules! In the manga, Light didn't tell us all the rules, he just read some of them! Light used the book utmost to 23 days of manipulation before death on the FIBs! In the beginning of L: Changed The WorLd, it stated that rule!

** Spoiler Alert!!! click to hide or show** True the shinigami says when you use the death note you're not going to heaven or hell, but in the end of the manga, Ryuuk said everyone will have the same fate, as there's no such thing as heaven or hell. hahahaha the ending made me laugh xD
Anw, i really recommend this maker of this question to go read the manga or watch the anime. That'll solve all your questions, and I think the plot in the manga/anime is a lot nicer.

its the rule that the max days before the person's name written in the deathnote will die is 23days.

"If you write, die of disease for the cause of death, but only write a specific time of death without the actual name of disese, the human will die from an adequate disease. But the Death Note can only operate within 23 days in the human calendar. This is called the 23 day rule."
Unless I have a bootleg copy, this is one of the rules.

but wasn't there and eraser that can alter death and erase what happened?? i remember reading that in the manga.

ahh u might hav read the DN that a 13 yr old boy that hav picked up the death note, ryt?.. thats a difrent story , it is only compose of one chapter, it has nothing 2 do with the story of light yagami...
