Stuff you can't buy in your own country or if they are cheaper in Japan. One great example is Japanese books! It's about 2-3 times more expensive in my country than in Japan itself. And I just found out in my recent trip that there are wonderful secondhand bookstores that sell tons of manga and books at really low prices. Like between US$1.05 - US$4 per book. Here when it's imported, the price goes up to at least US$10.

Kimono would be nice but it is super expensive. Get a yukata instead. It's a summer kimono, easier to wear and much cheaper.

Sodas! @_@ Lots of 'em! Melon flavor soda (why can't we have that flavor over here?) Ramune sodas, any unique flavors, a six pack or two of coke, and anything in glass bottles. After that, clothing. I love anime but I'm not much into merchandise. So I'd skip out on dvds and such.

for myself i would buy: manga, shoes, electronics, drama and anime dvds. If I was buying gifts for my family, I would get kimonos for the females, anime or video games for the kids, and sake or some other kind of alcohol for the men.

thanks for the suggestion on the yukata. but for the mangas, they wouldn't be translated into english, making it hard to read
