Miko is a Japanese term that anciently meant "female shaman, shamaness; medium; prophet" who conveyed divine oracles, and currently means "shrine maiden; virgin consecrated to a deity" who serves at Shinto shrines.

Miko are common characters in some Japanese literature, manga, and anime. Miko are often stock characters and are readily identified by their distinctive costume. Perhaps the most common depiction of a miko has the character sweeping the grounds of a shrine with a bamboo-shafted broom.

Miko's

> Yamatohime-no-mikoto, daughter of Emperor Suinin, founder of Ise Shrine
> Himiko, early 3rd-century Queen of Yamataikoku
> Empress Jingū, consort of Emperor Chūai, mother and regent of Emperor Ōjin
> Izumo no Okuni, founder of kabuki.
> Donni Barrish, chief miko of Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America and a well-known example of a non-Japanese miko

What do you think of these female Shamans?
Why do you think they are so common in Japanese literature, manga and anime?
Have you ever seen an actual Miko?
Discuss Miko related topics.

(Note: Im 99.8% that this is not a duplicate. I did NOT know the true meaning of Miko back then. I thought it associated with royalty since Animelab translated it as prince/princess. Thus, it has no connection to my identity.)

Whoah there sister, you're making alot of threads. Are trying to destroy the balance between old and new threads?

As for miko, I fail to see the facination with them. I have no clue why they are popular in manga and anime, maybe because they're virgins? Never even been within 1 mile of a shrine, never mind miko.
